First time poster here, so you guys bare with me!! I am having a problem with a WD740DG Raptor and WD200BB. I did a "Drive to Drive Copy" with the Western Digital "Data Lifeguard" tool. My problem is, if I remove the WD200 the system won't boot. I have checked the files on both drives and they are "mirrored".
Here is my setup:
300w PS
Intel 3.2 processor
Intel D865GBF MB
WD740DG and WD200BB
Windows XP V5.1 W/ SP2
512 MB Ram
DDR400
BIOS version P19

All ideas and suggestions appreciated!! Guess I should have made this a new topic--Sorry
So I moved it here, being as I posted it under someone else's thread.

Apparantly not Blain, that or I have some settings wrong. I have the Raptor pulgged w/ the "WD Serial ATA Cable with SecureConnect" and a Legacy 12v plug also. Did this per WD tech over the phone. I have read or heard that I need a BIOS update from Intel. But getting a reply from Intel is like looking for hen's teeth.

From what I can see at the Intel site, you have the latest BIOS. You are going to have to get into the BIOS to set your boot order to include either SATA, Serial ATA, or SCSI. Whichever is available. Disconnect your 200GB until you get it to boot off the Raptor.

If I remember correctly, you press F2 to get into the BIOS on an Intel board. And you have to be quick about it too.

Your manual should be on the CD that came with the board. I can't find it to download and look over at the Intel site, so I can't say for certain what steps you need to follow to get this going.

You drive copy should be OK.

Are both Hard Drives SATA? If one is IDE and the other SATA... Windows wont have the drivers that will allow the Raptor to boot. You'll have to find a way to get those drivers to load.

If he doesn't have any problem devices when looking in device manager, he should be OK. Those drivers should already be installed.

boomerange and others who have offered help,
Here is what I show:

Under BIOS "Advanced"
ATA/IDE Configuration [enabled]
PCI IDE Bus Master [enabled]
Hard Disk Pre-Delay [Disabled]

[SATA Port-0 : WDC WD740GD-00FLA1]
[SATA Port-1 : Not Detected]
[PATA Primary Master : WDC WD200BB-00DEAO]
[PATA Primary Slave : Not Detected]
[PATA Secondary Master : Optorite CD-RW CW4802]
[PATA Secondary Slave : DVD 1648/BKH]

Under BIOS "Boot"
Silent Boot [Enabled]
Intel (R) Rapid BIOS Boot [Enabled}
PXE Boot to LAN [Disabled]
USB Boot [Enabled]
Then under "Boot Device Priority"
1st Boot device [PM-WDC740GD-00FLA1]
2nd Boot device [4M-Optorite CD-RW CW48]
3rd Boot Device [1st Floppy Drive]

Device Manager
No problems with any disk drives--All are listed!

Maybe that info will tell you something I need to do. I hope. I will mention, there are no jumpers on either HD. I have tried making the WD200BB the slave but still when I unplug it and try to boot with only the Raptor, system won't boot.

With just the Raptor installed, do you get a message similar to no Boot Drive or no OS found? Can't remember the exact wording. Telling you that there is nothing to boot from anyway. Anything like that?

To conserve time, in Device Manager, is there a listing for SCSI devices or something similar?

Nothing like that boomerange, in Device Manager. It starts the boot sequence, I guess, goes through the thinge where the yellow bars(now blue, since the SP2 download a few weeks ago)run across the box, then goes to a screen similar to the "Welcome" screen but different--I think it has "Windows XP" in pretty small print--bigger than this--not a big banner type print though--Then just sits there with curser blinking but won't move-- I have to shut it down mannually and start over.

OK, now we're getting somewhere. Your disk copy didn't take. I'm almost tempted to have you call WD and ask them why their Data Lifeguard software doesn't work. Two of their drives, their software and no go.

I need to do a few minutes of investigation here. I'm going to try to find a site that can walk you through a few steps tp try. Hang in.

I called a friend I built a system for with an Intel board. He concurs there are no entries for SCSI or similar. I figured that would be the case as the chipset on your board supports SATA natively.

Anyway, here's link that explains everything about the Recovery Console. You are going to want to try the Bootcfg and/or Fixmbr commands. Try them in that order and see what you get.

I've got to tell you that I don't have much hope for this. You may have to use some third party commercial software to copy the drive. Others have had good luck with Ghost, I have not. I do very much recommend Acronis. Stay away from DriveImage. Your other option is of course a fresh install.

Most important! Do NOT have your 200GB drive hooked up when you run the Recovery Console. Too easy to get the drives confused. Have just the Raptor in and make your life easier.

With just the raptor attached to the system, can you get into windows in "safe mode"?

If all else fails, you can reinstall XP from the CD, and leave all documents etc. intact (you end up just creating a new windows folder, and leaving all the other files and folders untouched). A pita, because you have to reinstall your app's, etc/. but I've done it myself sometimes and it's a bit better than wiping the drive clean.
