Raptor or not for OS ?

My plan is to run XP from a new 36GB Raptor, I know that's the fastest way to boot and run from my reading. I'm currently using PATA/100 drives for XP and storage so how much improvement should I see in boot times and just overall windows usage? The OS is on the primary IDE with another storage drive on the primary IDE as a slave. The secondary IDE is loaded with two DVD drives.

Another question, my mobo has two SATA channels but they are both 1.5 Gbs not the faster 3.0's. Will there be much benefit to using a raptor here for the OS versus a larger SATA drive with the OS on the first partition? I would hope to see several seconds shaved off boot times but if not I may go with a larger SATA 3.0 ( for future use as well ) running at 1.5 Gbs as limited on the mobo.

No plans to upgrade the mobo, as I will be building a new rig in the coming year.

Any other tips or suggestions for fast boot times and windows usage is much appreciated.

Doesn't matter about SATA connectors.

IMO get 750 or 500GB HDD and forget Raptor.
~13 times more storage (if 500gb), similar speed, if not better.

The higher density, the more data read per rotation. Now think how low is density of 36 raptor vs. 500gb HDD?

Ok, got the point. But how much faster boot times will I see ( estimate ) by putting XP on a 1.5 Gb SATA channel versus my current PATA/100 shared channel? If I get a SATA 300 ( which will default to my mobo's 1.5 Gb thruput ) which would run at 150 MB/s vs. the PATA/100 100 MB/s could I expect to see 50% faster boot times or more?
 
The SATA150 and PATA100 specs are interface limits. However they are rarely the limit for disk transfers, because in most cases the disk is far slower than the interface limit. In your case, the Raptor will be a faster boot drive than older PATA100 drives, but not because of the SATA interface.
 
Yep, boot times depend on how fast the DISK is. If you put a slow drive on SATA and a fast 500gb drive on PATA, 500gb will boot faster.
