Raptor drives (74 gig) Die hard and often...

I got my first raptor about a year ago. It lasted me around a year at 70-80 mb/s on HD tach, then it took a shi tand went to 3mb/s. So I RMA'd it. I was sent a "refurbished" drive which didnt make me happy and I sent an angry email.... Finally I decided that if it worked then I wouldnt care. Well here is what has happened.

This HD tach jpeg shows me testing after install, and 1 month later (this morning). You be the judge...

4 weeks.... Standard home use (NHL 2004, flight sims, MS office)
It has a YS tech 80 MM fan blowing over it from 2 inches away, that has a filter.... Its in a drive enclosure all by itself in the middle to get max air over top and bottom... my case temps are 28C maximum....

look at the OLD benchmark from 9-29-04.. The cpu util is low and normal... I havent changed anything on the drive since it is installed and it was UDMA then...

This downfall happens in a slow progression, I have a benchmark from the start of this week where it is at 45mp/s... I had hoped it was a fluke because I saw this slow progression towards death in my FIRST raptor as well.

During the first's death, it was literally dying 5 mp/s per week in my tests, just got slower and slower over time till it ended up rock bottom, I thought HD tach was being a fluke at first, then realized that in NHL 2004 that it was skipping and running slow, I tried graphics and all, but only when I muted the sound (not pulling sound bytes from the drive anymore) did it get ok, and windows would take 2 minutes to boot to desktop from power on, but at installiation I had it clocked at 32 seconds....

🙂

I might, but then I have to spend more money, I think that WD should honor their warranty till 2K9

See I'd check all of this stuff.... EXCEPT... that

A: I havent changed anything since install
B: It worked as advertised for 2 weeks before any speed losses
