WASHINGTON - A State Department investigation has corroborated reports earlier this year that Burmese military officials have systematically raped ethnic minority women and girls, according to a recently declassified copy of the investigation report.

The report by the Thailand-based groups concluded that the Burmese military, as part of its campaign to bring ethnic areas under its control, officially condones rape as a ''weapon of war'' against civilian populations.

All of the rape victims had been gang-raped by Burmese soldiers within the past five years, including a 13-year-old girl who had been raped two months earlier.

''The older women sobbed violently as they recalled horrific incidents of their own rapes as well as brutal rapes, torture, and execution of family members,'' the State Department report said.

The victims of such cruel acts were clearly hurt and violated, so yes, I do argue that it was immoral. I see what you are trying to argue, but don't think it applies here.

Differences in culture or not, sometimes we gotta know when to draw the line between cultural differences and human rights violations. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that the rapings of those women is wrong.

but seriously, i do think that is sort of a pussy notion... i do not think we should impose our sense of morality in matters such as sex or something... things that don't really hurt anybody. but in cases where innocent people are getting hurt, i think it is okay that we impose our sense of morality.

i look at it like this... everybody has different ideas of what morality should be, blah blah blah. but there are some that are common to all civlized peoples, and these should be the ones that are enforced. not everybody agrees on whether or not abortion should be legal... so we don't impose these things. same thing goes for prostitution, drug use, etc. not to say that it isn't bad, or that it is, but that there are rational, civilized people, on both sides, therefore we mark this as "gray". but for something like rape and murder of innocent people, no rational, civlized person would agree that it is acceptable, therefore we can mark that as "white". that's what i think, at least.

OT: That's not necessarily true. Tom cats will kill a mother's kittens and then mate with her to ensure his own genes persist, rather than the original father's. I'm sure this is true for other animals as well.
