RANT mode on:

Bah, every l33t cyber wannabe is citing gibson as the ultimate font of knowledge and the supreme deity of cyberpunk. Most of them are not even aware of authours like John Brunner and Vernor Vinge who started they cyberpunk movement before there even was a cyber punk movement. The schockwave rider, often credited as the firste cyberpunk book was written in 1975 and it has not dated the slightest since it was written. for just a short list of everything that Brunner predicted:

1. Completly ubiqutous internet
2. government automatic monitoring of every phone call and data request ala carnivore
3. Think tanks designed to foster the "poor intelligent" among society ala Princton head start program or whatever it's called
4. the "heroic hacker" who is able to manipulate all personal records from a public telephone/computer(he melds the two into one ala web portals)
5. the rise of small scripts that could transfer via the network and selectivly alter files aka Virii(Note: he was actually the first person to coin the word Wrom and was a major inspiration for the RTM worm which basically brought down the net)
6. the increased paranoia that someone knows something about you that you dont
7. the fact that the increase in computerisation would lead to rapid job changes which can lead to nervous breakdown(the average number of jobs a person has in his life is around 5 now as opposed to 1-2 50 years ago)
8. the overloading of information by the spread of the internet overwhelming people
too tired to think of anything else, add to this not-so-conclusive list if youve read the book

[edit] and for the old timers, just remind us what type of technology was actually around in 1975[/edit]

William Gibson first coined the phrase "cyberpunk" or "cyberspace" in his novel Neuromancer ..
either that, or Neuromancer was the first book to user cyberpunk/cyberspace.. but i know it has to do with Neuromancer

Wow! I was just sort of watching/trying to get a little sleep through a show last night talking about this same subject.

Untrue, Gibson never claimed to coin the term cyberpunk, that was coined by a little known friend of his, he was credited to have coined the term cyberspace.

BTW: If you have watched the matrix, it seems to draw very strongly from Shockwave rider especially the ending

That's right -- it was cyberspace. Given the now ubiquitous nature of that word, it is inevitably related to his work, which is the most well known cyberpunk to most people. Personally, I prefer Walter Jon Williams' two main cyberpunk novels, Voice of the Whirlwind and Hardwired. Awesome stuff.
