RANT: Why do people have kids when they can't afford them?

This sums up most of the reasons I think. It's a shame our tax dollars are spent like this, but the truth is that I would rather my tax dollars go towards this stuff then have thousands of hungry kids on the streets in my country. Anyone who thinks that this problem will go away if all taxes suddenly stopped funding this stuff is sadly mistaken. At best, it will reduce it a little, but not by much.

It could also be carelessness, although that could also apply to people who could afford them, but may not have been planning on having them at the time. Forgetting to take BC pills, not using condoms, relying on the pull out method, etc.

Of all the kids born now, I wonder how many of them were deliberate decisions, and how many "just happened".

Humans are hard wired to reproduce. Learning to control your finances is something that is learned (oftentimes unsuccessfully) over time. A friend of mine once explained it to me like this regarding when most couples are ready for having children:

physically: early 20's
emotionally: late 20's early 30's
financially: never

Here is a few stray thoughts to add.

They could pass a federal law forcing cigarette and alcohol makers to include a condom with every purchase. Then there really isn't any excuse to have kids just because you spend your last dollar on booze or smokes.

Maybe they need to air drop condoms over poor areas of town, or mail them or hang them on doors with pizza coupons. Maybe drop some condoms in Halloween trick or treat bags or put them in Easter eggs. Maybe Santa Clause can drop a few in some Xmas socks.

Or they could just add something to the water supply to stop fertility (if they aren't already).

Ya, I'm sure this reason accounts for a lot of them too. To be honest, the only people that really get on my nerves are the ones who have planned pregnancies like the OP is talking about mostly for religious reasons and they cannot afford it without the government. To me, that is deliberate abuse of what these funds are supposed to be used for. The purpose of these funds is to keep kids from starving along with keeping a roof over their heads since a lot of Americans are irresponsible in terms of pregnancy and money. I know some poor people will choose to have kids and not care because it means more welfare, but these people almost never intend to get pregnant before it happens and therefore do not plan ahead to use these funds. You can't say the same for the poor people with "religious duties" to have children.

Like people who spend loads of money on a kitten and all kinds of accessories. All the cats I've ever had have only had the expense of food and vet visits associated with them. News flash: Your pets already have the benefit of never having to worry about missing another meal in their lives, a roof over their heads, and access to medical science like they'd never be able to comprehend. They'll be just fine.

I have pondered creating a modified game of Simon to see if cats can learn patterns for the sake of getting some tasty treat. But that's for after I'm done with college.
I figure that while they've got their lazy, cushy lives, why not give them something mentally stimulating too?

Indeed. That's something that bothers me a bit, too, which is hearing this: "I want to have a baby." Do you want it so as to satisfy your own desires to coddle something, or do you really feel that there is a need to bring another sentience into existence and then nurture it for either its own benefit, or that of humanity? If the former, it seems rather selfish. If the latter, go ahead and try to mold that new sentient life form into the best one you know how to.

I had a good link of the legal implications on this matter, but could not find it off hand. They actually will now be able to regulate human birth based on this patent whenever they choose to start doing so. i love how everyone jumped on the "the gov't will support them with your tax dollarz!" bandwagon. the OP doesnt mention welfare or gov't assistance, why are you assuming they are on it? i have 3 kids, and life was tough when they were younger. they were also my motivation to go to college and get a real job, but at no time were they ever fed with gov't cheese or coupons. we were flat broke too. i also didnt have a computer, ipod, cell phone or any of the toys i enjoy now. i did have reliable transpo tho, that is a must.
