(RANT)Why are retail managers retarded?

I have a summer job at the Sports Authority. Decent pay, friendly co-workers, but hard-ass head manager. This moron got yelled at by the corp. office because the store looks like sh!t. It looks this way because he NEVER schedules enough people to run the store and keep up with the cleaning and stocking. So what does he do after he gets yelled at? He schedules 3 F*&#)(G to close the entire store! ARG! Why is it that I always get the crappy managers?!?!
Rant over.

And as a retail manager i can say that in general not too many bright, intelligent people want to work in the retail field for 6-7 bucks an hour, when they could be doing other things. The people that stay in retail management don't tend to be very intelligent either, because if they were, they could probably get better paying jobs elsewhere. However, its a heck of a resume booster for mba programs.

That's retail for you. I've worked retail for 3 years now - it's just $hit you have to suck up and deal with. It builds character so deal with it.

Would you like it if someone walked into the place of your work and threw sh!t around for no apparent reason? I saw a woman knock over a stack of shoes tonight and run away, knocking over several golf-bags in the process. I don't mind helping people out, and pointing out stuff. But cmon, sometimes it just gets rediculous.

I worked retail for almost a year and every night I had to straighten all the crap on the shelves. You get paid to do it and if you are going to complain just quit.

But at least you know what I am talking about. I bet you have more respect now when you shop and put things back more often than others do. It should be a law to make everyone work retail for at least 2 months. Give them a taste of their own medicine.

I have the same respect for the store as I did before working there.

it sucks to have to clean up after other people, but in essence thats what you are being paid to do. i worked at blockbuster for a while, and it was a lot of rearranging movie boxes that people placed in the wrong places, it frustrated me, but thats what they paid me to do, why else were they giving me minimum wage?

and i can say that i do not have anymore respect for the job now that i have done customer service...as long as you have a good attitude, thats all that matters...i hate all the customer service people who have bad attitudes, like the supermarket checkout lady who acts like shes parting the ocean when shes scanning my groceries....its like, hey, you chose this path, live with it....

Hehe, $6 to $7 dollars an hour? You're working at the wrong retailer...

Yes, I have. But when the district manager tells him to get the store cleaned up by any means possible, and then he schedules less people...you get the point.

Have you talked to him and asked him if there is any way to get more people on busy nights so that the merchandising duties can get done?

Also, the question I would ask to you is if you and your coworkers are making good use of your time. Cleanup isnt just an after closing thing. WHenever you're not directly dealing with a customer or taking care of their needs to should be preparing to close the store. If you each can do 20 minutes worth of work before the store closes, thats an hour worth of work that you save.

My experience has been that most retail workers wait until the last minute to finish stuff like that and when they are open and not dealing with customers, they are bsing with each other and being otherwise unproductive.

I can't speak for your manager exactly, but I've been there, and it's damn near impossible to staff a store so that everything's clockwork. You can't really force that 17 year old that lives with his parents to come in on a Saturday night for 6-7 bucks/hour, and from my experience, it's hard as hell to get the corporate HR people to let you terminate someone. So, even if five people are scheduled to close that store on any given night, you're pretty lucky if three show up. Not to mention only so many hours are allocated for the week, and you can't afford to schedule that many closers, because on the off chance they do show, you'll just get bitched out for exceeding your hours.

And as far as customers not making a mess of things - good luck. I was pretty good about leaving things the way I found them before working retail, but I now find myself sometimes unconsciously alphabetizing CDs. =\

On your side though, two of the three managers I had at my last retail job were fairly incompetent - also, it was policy the SM would close two nights a week, including a weekend night - neither one did. Result: the hours were complete ass for the rest of us.

/end my whining

He does it because he probably gets a second call from Corporate slamming him about not making payroll.

My wife is a retail manager (and is rather intelligent). She gets slammed for not meeting certain store appearance guidelines, then gets told to cut back her hours, and then they expect her to comp. It's hard for her to get everything right, when she has a VP (Corporate), Regional Manager and District Manager all telling her to do different things.
