OK, a bit of background. On Monday I get back from work, and I have a group meeting for a big presentation the next day. Since I can't afford to park on campus (even though I live in a dorm), I cruise the area where I usually park (about a half mile from where I live). Eventually I see a couple spots, on the right and left of an alley. Unfortunately, a couple morons have parked on either side and (either deliberately or out of sheer idiocity) have only left ~6 feet between them and the end of the curb. Well, I need to park, so I pick the bigger spot and get as close to the guy in front of me as possible (about an inch from his bumper). I look at the rear of my car, and it makes me nervous because I'm past the curb by about 2-3 inches, but I figure that's not a big deal. Hopefully the guy in front of me will learn to park next time.

Fast-forward to today, when I get up bright and early and walk the half mile to my car.
Except my car is not there. I walk around the whole area, wondering if maybe I had parked it somewhere else and not remembered, but the car is gone. I call work and tell them the car's gone, I check the mail for a tow notice, I call the house I stayed at over the summer and see if THEY've gotten a tow notice. I start to call the cops, but first I call the impound lot to see if they have my car.
Sure enough, they do. So I take the long bus ride up to the lot, pay my $120 to get my car, and to add insult to injury they give me a ticket for $40, which presumably is extra.

On the ticket, it says "PARALLEL PARK-COMPLAINT-BLOCKING WESTBOUND" (or something like that).
OK, first off, I was "blocking" NO ONE, I was taking up all of two inches past the curb (which is bigger than the alley anyway), and if I was blocking someone it would be north-south, not west. Second....COMPLAINT???!?!? Am I to understand that some concerned citizen decided that not being able to physically compress my car to fit in the spot left by someone elses' crappy parking was an indication of a terrorist plot or something? What kind of worthless waste of genetic material would waste his time and the government's money to call in something like that? I can understand if I was actually BLOCKING the alley, but clearly whoever it was just likes to make other people miserable. I guess I'm not quite used to as perverse and legalistic a country as this.

You know, I TRY to like humanity. I really do. I remind myself of people who have been courteous and gone the extra mile for me, but it's hard for them to have as much an impact as when complete strangers try to make your life a living hell with little to no provocation. Sometimes I think the whole species should be scrapped and we should start fresh.

Cliff notes:
Due to someone else not leaving enough space, my car was about 2" too big for a spot, I get towed and have to pay $160, I'm pissed and hate the Nazis who called it in.

Because it's fun pissing other people off.

But it sounds like you know you're in violation of some parking code, but did it anyway, got no one to blame there but your cheap self. If you had parked at the campus lot, this would never have happened. And quit bitching, around here it costs close to $300 to pickup your car from the police central pound 1st thing in the next morning. And if you don't pick it up the 1st day, they'll tow it to the giant pound at one of the piers, and the fee compounds.

I looked...I was late for the meeting and really needed to park.:(

Believe me, on the days when I don't have anything to do, I make sure I'm parked in a way that NO ONE can complain. Sometimes it takes 30-40 minutes to find a spot, since it seems people don't know how to pull all the way to the end of the curb and thus end up taking 2 cars' worth of space.

I wish I could afford to get a *real* parking spot, and leave this crap behind.

you knew it was past the curb, dont be suprised. one day i parked too close to an intersection in front of a store, ran in for 2 seconds, come out and see a cop looking at my truck. so i just walked by like it wasnt mine and walked home. i had no insurance / registration and warrents :) went and got my truck from the tow place, a week later got pulled! twice in a week, but it was my own fault.

Blah. Making fun of people pissed off at the people who bust them for bad driving/parking/etc has been done to death.

I didn't know potheads were so legalistic;)

Parking on campus costs $300 a quarter or something...I would get rid of the car if I could, but I need it for my job, and I need my job to pay my bills, so I'm kind of stuck.

I'm trying to be sympathetic but you knew you were too close to the corner. Sure, it sucks that the other guy didn't park intelligently, but sometimes you have to pass up a spot that is only going to bring you trouble.

I bet you can't even be within a couple feet of the end of the curb and still be legally parked, so the 2-3 inches you were over wasn't the problem.

You wouldn't have taken that space if you weren't late, so the problem there wasn't someone else's.

When it comes to these alleys, you can be right on the edge and it's not a problem. When it comes to a "normal" curb, you can be right up to the white paint on the crosswalk, and if there's a "no parking south of here" sign, you can be right up to the edge of the sign.

It wouldn't bug me if it was a question of a couple feet...but I hate paying $160 over 2-3 inches.

I just grew up in a different culture...one that wasn't nearly as legalistic...and it's coming back to bite me. My philosophy is to let the little stuff slide, and I guess I just have to get used to the fact that there's a horde of people out there who are perfectly willing to invest their time to ensure that the law is absolute and unbending.

Next time you see that car, put a nice blanket on the front of your car or something (to prevent paint transfer) and "nudge" the car forward however hard you want to make space. That oughta teach the sucker a lesson.

This is just begging to be parodied. "*RANT* Why are people so horrible at parking their cars? Bastards!". I can't bring myself to start another one though. It could tarnish my image.

alleyway != intersection.

well then I don't understand your description. You said your car stuck out 2 or 3 inches past the curb, right ? well, curb of what ? and you said there was 6 feet of space, space between what ?

is this a dead end alley where it was 6 feet to a wall ?

or was it 6 feet to an intersection with a street or another alley ?
