i really want one - but there are none that meet my requirements -

1)reliability/good warranty
2)support for .ogg
3)easy file transfer w/o excessive proprietary programs
4)good shuffle and playlist functions

the ipod loses on 2&3, the karma on 1, the iriver ihp on 4 - at least from everything i've read.
actually there is a winamp plugin for the ipod that allows you to use it w/o itunes.
so if apple would just support .ogg i would be a convert?
why oh why won't they do it???

the karma rules. I think they had HD problems early on, but it seems to be cleared up now. mines on month #4 of rockin' out and it's never given me any trouble, save the "unspecified error" that was fixed by switching USB ports.

meh. ogg is overrated.

I <3 my iPod.

Definatly.. people need to stop being so damn anal.

btw, people tried getting ogg to work on an iPod but I think they said the processor was too slow.. Bad codec design if you ask me :D

acc at higher bitrates (128> ) has proven better then ogg on several tests.

.ogg sounds far better to me than .mp3. It's especially noticeable using my senn 280s. I agree with the OP fully, and it's why I don't yet own a hdd DAP. Lack of an AM tuner across the baord is another reason for me, though I know most people don't care about that one.

I doubt you will ever see an AM tuner in a portable MP3 player because those antennas have to be huge.

Walkmans used to have them, you can buy little am/fm sport radios too for jogging and such. Reception might not be uber, but as long as you can hear what they're saying... I'm guessing not enough people want that for DAP makers to consider it.

Ipod + Ephpod = no clunky overly propriety software. Sure it's not as simple as pluging in and dragging and dropper, but it's not *that* bad. You can just dump the ephpod setup file on the ipod and just install it on a computer that doesn't have it if need be.

No comment on ogg. A 192k LAME rip works just fine for me.

I have a Rio Cali as well. It does not need proprietary software. You can xfer files to it with WMP10.
