Lovely Friday....

Here when I thought life was picking up speed, I had finally found a job that lifted me above the fray of stupidity that graces the halls of our fair government. I thought that I had finally found the freedom to work efficiently and effectively, and skirt around the bull.

But then I find myself sunk into a 6 month hole at the department of justice. They want an expert on site... ahhh an expert... yes that makes sense.... You are implementing a complicated SAN based Exchange environment, and you need my expertise to pull it off effectively. 6 months... no I don't think you really need 6 months... what are you going to do with me for 6 months?

Well now I know... For the past 3 weeks I have been stuffed into an office with 3 other contractors, without any cell phone reception, email, or internet of any kind. I didnt have access to the building I work in, or even access beyond the cubicle farm of a room in which I reside. I needed an escort in order to use the bathroom. I couldnt read books, I can't use any computer beyond my laptop which I cannot hook up to any network.... WHY?!?! What is the point... so for 3 weeks I've sat in my chair and stared blankly at a diagram of what the solution is going to be, that I'm not allowed to work on, that I was hired to work on.

WTF PEOPLE?!?! This is ridiculous... finally 3 weeks later I have email... and access to the general building... but still no bathroom privaleges, or access to the environment I was hired to work on. The prime contractor manager guy walks into my shared closet/office and asks me to send him a progress report from the last 3 weeks.... WTF PROGRESS?!?! WTF are you talking about?!?!

I all but laughed in his face... what the hell are these people thinking?

-Max

1 week later and the stupidity continues...

I finally have solid access to the internet, and email.... however I learned yesterday that they screwed up my email account creation so that whenever I send outgoing mails my last name is horribly misspelled.

I have been asked to write "Standard Operating Procedures" on the administration of our storage appliance. Ok thats easy... boom download all of that from my company document library... why reinvent the wheel? I drop a 26 page admin guide on their desk and say voila.

Well yesterday, we had a meeting with my boss, 2 other guys from my company and the guy running the show here. Apparantly people had been complaining that I was sitting around doing nothing, and they were questioning why I was brought in. My boss quickly jumps in with... but you sat him in a room with no internet, phone or access to the outside world.... what did you expect him to do during that time?

The guy responds back, well we really want Max to tell us what he should be doing.

ARE YOU FVCKING KIDDING ME?! What I should be doing is anything other than sitting in this stupid building wasting my time... I still don't have access to the systems we're supposed to be working on... and even when I do, it's been made clear that I will be over the shouldering only.

So now not only am I on a bullshyt 6 month assignment with no real work to do, but now I am on a bullshyt 6 month assignment with no work to do, and they're getting upset with me for not having work to do.

I guess now I'm supposed to try my hardest to look busy for the next 6 months.

I need to find some rope.

CLIFFs: The government are some money wasting, idiotic, assanine, asshat, poopoo heads

UPDATE 8/2:

Said SAN based Exchange environment implementation has been delayed 1 year.... and yet I am still required to be onsite everyday... and now I *officially* don't have anything to work on.

sheesh

well

lets just say the people in power were not always selected because they were the best or brightest. its about who you know.

and because of that society is held back. excellence is curbed when you have people that are incompetent for the job. i hope u figure it out man. that sounds like a sucky job

WTF??? A bathroom escort!! It sounds like it is time to jump ship. Ask your company to be reassigned to a different job.

Nah Contract Government jobs sometimes need security clearance for what he does. :) He is a cool guy anyways. I am sure he is going to move up in the department.

I've already begged to be reassigned... problem is likely to be 3 months before they can get someone on board to take the spot... add to that the 2 months it took them to get my clearance approved so I could even walk in the door... and the 3 weeks I've already used up... Best case scenario I get out a week earlier...

I'm screwed I just have to survive these 6 months...

I know what you're dealing with. The worst part is things could be worked in your favor but most-likely the staff they have that could fix things up for you are burned out and underpaid so good luck.

I'm not sure what you're supposed to be doing with the SAN there, but if you're not in a server room it's hard to make any progress unless you're just installing clients on everyones' systems.

I'm about to do Exchange 2003 in a NAS environment in the next year or two....it's going to take that long to coordinate the system since it's going to have over 100k users. It's gonna suck trying to pull that off. :(

Doboji's Progress Report:

After 3 weeks I've learned to make oragami cranes out of notebook paper and found a way to download porn with my email. Attempts to ditch my potty buddy have thus far continued to fail.

Funny thing is people watch shows like NCIS and think that the Feds actually operate at that level of technology. If they only showed the dismal reality that most Federal technology really operates at the conspiracy nuts might actually rethink things.

Sorry about your current situation. It's actually kinda funny though. How long do you have left until you start doing something?

Back when I got a DOJ clearance it took about 3 months. IIRC they did come back with an interim in about 30 days though which meant that I could go to the can unescorted.

I have to agree, though not federal government, worked in the Univeristy of Texas system for a while, when I started working there I was shocked at the age of some of the equipment that was in use. I'm talking stuff that was donated to the university from the army and navy after WWII and was still being used daily. At the time in the department I worked in there were two guys that were dedicated to keeping all of that old equipment running. They worked in a room that was piled high in vacuum tubes, electro-mechanical relays, and the like. In the office I worked in the two computers one of which was an Apple II CX and this was in 1999...

a lot of air traffic control facilities are using radar that is 40 years old and computers that are 20+ years old. scary.

I don't feel like this thread has satisfied my need for attention yet...

EDIT: here's something I can add... there's a fantastic gym right down the hall from me... with everything you could ever want in a gym.

It's free too...

but

Contractors aren't permitted to use it... govt employees only.

Thats odd. Most Fed places I worked at did allow contractors to join the gym if they wanted to.
