Sorry no link on this one...

There was a case in Finland recently involving a group of drunken people. Apparently, they found a hedgehog, and decided to have some fun. First, they kicked it around and threw pebbles at it. After they had done that, they poured some gasoline on it and set on fire. Then one of then killed it by throwing a large rock on it.

Please tell me, why are there such morons on this planet?? It's not like hedgehogs can harm anyone. Reason they did that was pure malice. Their sentence? A fine and a suspended sentence! Why is it that people who apparently enjoy causing pain and suffering on helpless creatures get away so easily? What is it that causes humans to act in such cruel way (I know that there are more gruesome examples of human cruelty than this, but still)? What kind of sick, twisted individual would want to torture innocent creatures that cause them no harm in any possible way?

I myself have been living close to hedgehogs for all my life, and over the years I have learned to respect and love them. Seeing people who think it would be "cool" to torture one, just makes my blood boil! That applies for all living things, not just hedgehogs.

Sorry for ranting, just had to get some stuff off my chest :(

Things like that are just despicable and uncalled for. It takes a monster to do something like that to another living being. :disgust:

Several months ago, the neighbors next door to me moved out. When they did, they simply left their seven month old kitten. I took her in and, and she is now spayed and has her shots. She's sweet, albeit a bit demanding, often grabbing my leg if I don't stop to pet her. Somehow I think she knows what happened to her, because every time she sees a moving truck now she gets very distressed and comes running to me for comfort.

Pets are for life people, don't just leave them when you get tired of them.

But as to why? Bear in mind that the reason humans are effectively #1 on this spinning ball of mud is that we are the most ruthless predators on the whole planet and use our big, mushy brains for beating the bejesus out of anything that crosses our collective path. We're just not very nice as a race. We haven't been on top long enough for our evolution to catch up with us. Sad, but them's the facts.

Look at it this way: in most countries on earth (by count), what these idiots did wouldn't even be against the law. At least the Finnish legal system had its way with them.

Sadly, we lack sufficient data to verify any thesises. May I suggest that instead of ranting on the obvious lack of understanding we have of Human behaviour, and that of any other lifeform with a complex nervous system, we concentrate on doing research regarding this issue?

Wallowing in ignorance is everything but a useful and efficient use of one's time.

Being drunk is no valid excuse for stupidity IMO. They had enough intelligence to know how to set the creature on fire. They weren't drunk enough to stop them from playing soccer with it.

Drunken or not, most people are smart enough not to act like morons.

Indeed, doing that to helpless beings is f*cko. Doing that to your enemies though...

I never said it was. I only explained that Human behaviour, especially when the higher functions of the brain have become impaired is very poorly, if at all, understood.

Intelligence is relative, and subject of debate.

There have been numerous occassions around here where a group of drunken guys ripped traffic signs out of the ground and snapped young trees. Vandalism. How do you explain this behaviour?

You can't explain anything until you understand how the brain functions. The required knowledge can only be obtained through research.

I am very embarrassed to admit to this, but as a child, about ten years old I think, I was out mowing lawns and had a can of gasoline. My friend and I happened upon a big bullfrog. I found a coffee can by the side of the road, filled it with gas and put the frog into it, then setting it ablaze.

That is the cruelest thing I have ever done, and I cried when I got home at the evil deed I had done, and the poor frog's last breath as it shrieked like i've never heard a frog or any animal for that matter shriek.

Since then I am very pro-animal, and cannot stand to hear or see animal cruelty and I do anything I can do to prevent it, like educating people on what I know about animals, which is quite a bit actually.

I have to say that I hate organisations like PETA though, because all they do is give people like myself a bad name, so instead of helping and furthering their cause they are obstructing any good that could possibly come of it. I'll stop now.

i don't know, i've seen a lot of drunken morons in my day... :D

p.s. before any reaction, let me clarify that drunkeness certainly does not excuse their behavior. They were responsible for getting themselves drunk, and they're responsible for what they do while they're drunk.

My parents once told me that when I was only a child, I one day put a little kitten in the deep-freeze. Fortunately the little critter was discovered before it was too late and suffered no negative consequences of the experience.

I can, when asked why I ever did it, only respond with what every parent knows: children have this unquenchable desire to learn and to investigate. Their behaviour is often very irrational, and things are done without any apparent reason.

gopunk, I have no idea what I was thinking, nor what I wanted to accomplish. How could you think there was any real motivation other than to take a life of some sort. I had never done so and I suppose I wanted to see what it would be like. I didn't enjoy it, and so i'll never do anything even remotely like that again. I don't even kill insects now.

Asking me why I did it is like asking someone why they step on ants. They aren't afraid of ants, they just feel like stepping on one, maybe to feel superior or something, i'd have to look back at my Psyc 101 books to get any insight as to why. Maybe I just wanted to feel superior, who knows, I just wish I hadn't done it at all as I still think about that poor frog till this day. Seriously, I think it really made a lasting impression on my thoughts on life and death and how precious it really is to be alive, even when you wish you were dead.

That's the best way to put it :)

Getting drunk sure is fun, but whenever it happens, you choose to do it and choose to accept the consequences that come with it

Having kids do stupid things is a different matter altogether. I guess you could say that it's needed for them to grow up. But these individuals wwho tormented this helpless creature were 20+ year old! they knew exactly what they were doing!

For the third time, substances like alcohol impair the higher brain functions. They couldn't form a proper judgement due to the intoxication.

This does not excuse them from their actions, because their only mistake was to get drunk. Beyond that they had little to no control over their actions.

People who have problems killing a hedgehog in a most gruesome manner might not have as much trouble killing a Human either.
