That's not true. The people that become Amway members tend to buy the crappy products to hopefully have that penny or two trickle up to all the people above them on the chain.

I agree... it is extremely annoying when I find out someone is being friendly just because they are hoping you will join their networking "business". I have a "friend" who only calls me when he's found some new networking scheme and he's hoping I'll jump on the boat with him...you would think after the 18th time I've said no...he'd realize I'm not interested... not the brightest fellow.

Huh??? That was actually a pretty good explanation, if a bit biased.
My father in law was into it for years. Actually had a serious inventory. He made about $2k a month on it, but he worked his butt off to get it. (I take home that much and sit on my lazy butt and answer the phone all day..heh)
My wife tried Mary Kay for a while, same kind of biz. You don't really make money until you've got a bunch of recruits under you. They make 10% (arbitrary amount... I forget exactly how much), you get another like 5%, the person above you gets like 3%... etc. My wife made a little, but she always spent more on her makeup than she made. sigh.
The only Amway product I liked was ReDo, and it's been discontinued for years... It wasn't terribly safe to have around the house, but it would remove ANY stain from ANYTHING. It was the shizt.
I think it's a fair explanation, as said above, possibly biased but mostly accurate. I don't suppose you have a 'better' explanation. Not that I'm interested in it.... You can sugar coat it and add some other BS but in the end, you sell stuff and recruit other people to sell stuff.

I used to be in it and I still use some of their products.
it is a legit company, it has pro's and cons to it as a business model, but most of the produts are very good. I still use their water filtering systeam at home. it was rated as ne of the best by consumer reports. they are a large company and are the butt of many people's joke's but their image is tied to the people in it. some are good some bad.

Wow same thing happened to me in Barnes and Noble a couple of years back.
I'm looking through the Astronomy section, real hottie starts talking to me about how interesting it is.
I was about 19, and I figured her to be mid to late 20's but she was hot and I definitely would.
Then turns out that she handed me a business card to work at her business that she and her husband have.
I thought about it, but watched her drive away in a beat up old jalopy.
Didn't look too successful to me.

Amway is like a religion here in North Carolina. Freaky and unnerving is the way I would describe the way these people hang out in stores looking for the next victim, *ahem* I mean, next associate business partner.
In Amway for you to survive and prosper (gold level, anyone?) you must be able to work youself up the pyramid. You must be able to regional-ize your market base. This means in plain english that you must find people who will sell your products for you. You must be in effect a supplier for others instead of a salesman yourself.
The downside to all this is that you can never really move "up" in the company, because the company is you. You are already the president and CEO of your Amway distributorship. You are not part of the Amway organization except as their tool.
And the real shame to all this is in their regional meetings. It's a big rah-rah with people coming forward to say how much they are selling. But for those who aren't selling (or as much), there is public shame heaped on those people. And in some meetings hey've even quoted from the bible to support their brand of consumerism.
It's not for me and I wish they would stop preying on the weak.
