*RANT* Restaurants that charge $2 for a glass of soda

MexiCasa in Anaheim, CA (Lincoln and Brookhurst) has 60c sodas!!!

Place is kinda trashy looking outside, but clean inside. I've been in the kitchen (my son's FRIEND's mom works there...MILF) and it's very clean and everything's fresh.

4 of us ate for $22. 😀
 
BigSmooth, I stand corrected that some items would be sold below cost. I hadn't heard that. Don't get me wrong - I was not saying restaurants make exorbitant profits. You have to sell above your cost in order to stay in business. I gave examples that were pretty close to 30% of cost, but I am not implying restaurants are making a killing. I think it's a damn difficult business to work in.

My point is that it's ironic for people to whine about the cost of soda, when they cheerfully buy all the other things on the menu which are actually marked up higher! And that people would go out to dinner, expecting a good meal and good service in a nice atmosphere, and purposely order water (instead of a beverage they might actually enjoy) because they think it's a ripoff. That good meal, good service, and nice atmosphere has to be paid for, folks.

Ordering water because you think soda generates too much profit for the restaurant is downright silly.

cherrytwist, I don't think I've ever been to a restaurant that didn't give free refills on non-bottled soft drinks. I guess some areas have different customs on that subject.

and...have you noticed how they cleverly take the drink order first?...you'll probably be kind of thirsty...so you'll end up drinking half of it, then finish it while starting eat and order another....all sneakily done.

I don't think the point here is being cheap or the fact that restaurant owners are rolling in dough (hehe), but more that the cost should be labeled on the menu and indicate free refills or not. Some places I go they give a big jug of soda for $1.50 w/free refills and others I pay $2.00 for a small glass. My gripe and probably the gripe of many others is that soda is the least cost of most things sold at a restaurant and IMO is aside from the actual dinner. You can get Coke anywhere (they don't sell Pepsi) but you can't get that big slab of steak prepaired perfectly just anywhere.

kranky, I've seen VERY few items actually sell above cost if we're only talking raw materials. The only time I've seen it happen are on really cheap happy hour items or something that uses "trim" - for instance, we might use extra beef trimmed from steaks or prime rib to make a BBQ Beef Sandwich, so on paper the cost looks high even though we are actually just using expensive beef that would otherwise go to waste.

Overall, you're right, we have to generate revenue by charging much more than the food itself would cost if you ran down to the supermarket and bought it. So if that's what you meant by "making money on every item", of course that's true 99.9% of the time. 🙂

While we made a pastoral visit to Cabo San Lucas in Mexico, we ventured to the restaurant adjoining the resort. Lo and behold, we were shocked at the price of a bottled water! In addition to paying $15 for a sandwich, we incurred a very unreasonable cost of $7 each for a bottled water!

I definitely agree with this, I get pissed when the menu/server says nothing about charging for refills and then I see charges for 3 sodas on the bill. If it's bottled, that's fine, but if you're just bringing it to me in a glass, I will assume free refills because that's what everyone else does.

This is AT we are talking about. Good value for the $. we're all ferengi's here.

i dont care about any restaurant's ability to make $. i dont have a favorite. if it dies, there are millions more i could go to. it's called competition. deal with those of us who think like that. 😛

the reason why i'm repeating there is that i like the food/service. yeah, business have a right to make a profit. but i also have the right to refuse to purchase stuff that i believe is a ripoff. and $2 for a soda is a ripoff.

Definitely true, and beverages do have a higher markup, so if you don't want to buy it, you don't have to. Then we'll just charge everyone else a little more, so they can start complaining about $3 sodas. 😉

Selling sugar water has made more money in this country than practically any other single item..... maybe oil..... or crack...... :Q
 
Ummm the chinese restuarants here in SoCAL (not pf changs or panda inn) charge $7 for a 2 liter bottle of coke or $2 for a can of coke. No refills.
 
at the restaurant where i work, soda costs $1.39, says so right on the menu (most people dont look, though) as well as saying that we offer free refills on soda (most people assume that). i agree with the original poster, that is how it should be. if a restaurant is too fancy to list their prices, then its too fancy for me 🙂
 
If the price isn't listed why don't you ask? And then say "those refills are free right?" If not snatch the glass back out of the waiters hand and suck on the ice.
 
if i see a pop machine close to me and able to get too...

i ask for water, drink it then go get my own pop...

well.. the soda is usually has free refills.. what I hate is when restaurants give you the CAN and a glass with ice.. wtf! I just paid $2 for a can of soda? no refills and I have to pour it myself?
