Rant: PS3 won't play VCDs

I bought these comedy series from china, Sadly they're only released on VCD, and what do you know, My 500 dollar Machine can't play them. I'm fuking pissed. It has mpeg decoders for sure, and yet it refuses to read a DAT file. wat the fuk hell. I was hoping for the ps3 to upconvert but nooooo,,,

XBMC is still the king. Once the Linux port is done maybe it will run on the PS3? I've heard there's issues with Linux on the PS3 not having access to the graphics accelerator, but I'm not sure how much XMBC would rely on that. Maybe have the fast CPU in the PS3 would be sufficient.

More than anything else, that would get me to buy a PS3. The only thing lacking in the project right now is the ability to run on more powerful hardware. It's format support is second to none and the interface with it's various skins is the best.

easily converted to an mpg. also vcds are horrible quality anyway, upconverting 352x240? youre going to be mighty disappointed.

Ok...play it on something else. VCD's are so crappy, though. The most you could do is rip it and convert it to a DVD.

So you're pissed that your bootleg ILLEGAL VCD's won't play in a machine you paid $500 for? Cry me a damn river, go buy a legitimate copy at the store. Boohoo

Yes, these are non bootleg vcd disks from china. Although It is quite difficult to tell, I got these from reliable sources.

It's a rant about why the fuking machine can't play the disk. If it wants to be a media center, then it should play everything on a disk.

i don;t think vcd will play in the machine period

ah well back to my 3007.

inveterate - I apologize for making an incorrect assumption. Hope you accept my apology.

Regardless - it's an old technology, I don't think Sony gives a rats ass about VCD.

Yeah, I'm actually surprised it won't play them. VCD was a fairly popular format in Asia, and it really wouldn't have taken much effort on Sony's part to enable that.

I hope mod chip comes out soon. So I can play All media on my MEDIA CENTER. And where are my RPGs, I want rpgs. enchanted arms is good, but not enough!!

R u joking. Is this possible? Cuz i honestly Want to do that. I've got Sega CD too.

There's a way to do it. IIRC, you have to buy a whole other part for the console.

Which whole other part, and don't say Duct Tape an Apex DVD player from walmart to it, Cuz then i'll be all sad.

Regardless of old technologies, VCDs play on pretty much any set top DVD player. Why not the PS3?

The mainstream society doesn't use VCD's enough for Microsoft and Sony to waste their time on implementing it. The reason why the PS2, Xbox, PS3, Xbox 360 and other consoles (if there are any I missed) play DVD"s is because you can go to almost any store nowadays and buy a DVD. Wherever it is you bought your console most likely sells video DVD's too, but probably doesn't sell VCD's. Now if most people don't have quick and easy access to VCD's, who's gonna use their console to play VCD's? Only the 10% of people that still (For some strange reason) use VCD's (it's 2007, c'mon). Not worth it.

Basically, VCD compatibility won't help sell systems, so there's no reason for any company to put it in their consoles. In an age where most of us are worried about Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD, who has time to even remember VCD's?

To the OP, I'm not sure why you're complaining about it. Nowhere did Sony claim the PS3 was capable of playing VCD's. Would you complain about your PS3 not being able to play audio cassettes or vinyl records?😕

Good point. And I doubt that even 10% of the user base still plays VCDs (at least in U.S.). Hell, I'd bet it is less than 1%!

No, it's called a "VCD board" or something.
