30 years ago the junk was made in Hong Kong.

Major brand Alkalines are made in China too!
Anyone remember when Alkaline batteries were cased in steel?

I had a credit card sized solar calculator in the mid '80s with no battery, so it's hard to believe that a calculator was considered a high-drain device only about ten years earlier. Crazy. I know glowing LEDs took more power than passive reflective LCD, but there was nothing mechanical, like a cassette player.

Calculators in the 70s were high drain for sure.
I had an Omron that had a fluorescent display that would use a pair of AAs in about two weeks.
