I dunno, maybe it comes from being a bank teller for 3 years, where you always get money set on the counter, and rarely handed directly to you.

I think there may be some germophobes as well. I have seen some customers not even make an attempt to hand it to the cashier when they are waiting for the money, just set it down on the counter. If I was the cashier I would place their change into a bag and double knot it.

It's so funny that they are afraid of accidentally touching a cashier yet what they are paying with and receiving is probably crawling with germs and microbes.

I usually hand them my money. If they aren't paying attention I might just toss in on the counter though.

Some Asian cultures don't directly hand over the money because they feel that they are giving away their own good fortunes.

As for handing money back change on top of the bills, it's to show the customer that they are giving the proper amount of money back. It's much easier at a glance to see it this way than the other way around.

If the cashier is waiting for the money, I hand it directly to them. If they're turned away or filling out an order, then I'll place it on the counter.

WTF? If you give a cashier money WHILE they are scanning your items, that's completely retarded. Let them finish what they are doing. What are we talking like 10-20 seconds?

I think there is a difference between (a) throwing it down on the counter and (b) putting it down on the counter when the cashier is too busy to accept it by hand.

I concur. (a) is rather rude, (b) is not. Normally though, I choose (c) Have money in hand, be patient enough to wait the five seconds for him/her to finish ringing it up and then extend palm to receive $. :p

Bingo, I would think (c) falls under common courtesy

Well, you can do headmath if you don't have a lot of stuff. But that's still pretty stupid to try and hand them your money before they've finished scanning everything.

It's very disrespectful. It cost customers karma points when I worked fast food.

I always hand it to them. Most of the time, I pay with my credit card and most places have the machines where you swipe it yourself now, but if I'm paying cash for something, I always hand it to the cashier. If I have change, I usually hand them the bills and then say "I've got change, too" and then hand them the change.

I also hate it when the cashier piles the receipt, bills, and change up in my hand. wtf am I supposed to do with all three things at once?
