RANT/POLL: How do you give your money to a cashier?

i've been working part time at my uncle's hotel gift shop and i've noticed many people seem to lack the common courtesy of handing me their money/credit card. maybe it's my asian decent, where it's considered rude not to use two hands to give things to adults/strangers. but i find it terribly annoying when people throw their money onto the counter and expect me to pick it up.

do i get your f-ing change out of the register and throw it onto the counter?

i don't mind when people count their money or change onto the counter and push it to me. at least gesture that you're giving me money. i swear, this one woman was digging for dollar bills from her purse and just kept flicking them onto the counter, all crumpled up. i wanted to take a quarter and bounce it off her dumbass forehead, hopefully leaving an imprint of george washington right under her hairline.

i've noticed this at my parent's business as well (a dry cleaners), when i used to work there as a teenager.

am i being overly uptight about this? am i the only one who finds this a tad disrespectful?

I think it's a little disrespectful but some of the people that do it probably don't realize that

It might be a tad uptight, but since I have worked retail I think it is incredibly rude to just throw your money ona the counter. If people are so pissy that they throw their money on the counter, maybe they should try working there for 8 hours :p

i worked retail for 3 years and yes it get's to be insanely rude. i've had people fling their card at me so that it falls off the counter, it took everything i had not to slit their throats with the cards after i picked them up. most people know they're being an ass when they do it. some are just so self-absorbed that their action towards others never even cross their minds

edit- can you tell i hated retail?

I will do this when I pull out my cash for the cashier to take and he/she never bothers to grab it out of my hands. I worked retail too. If you cannot handle grabbing cash while scanning an item, that's your problem.

What realy rattles my cage is when cashiers give me the receipt first, then the notes , then the change in that order in the same hand.

Therefore I have to use my other hand to slide the notes and receipt whilst keeping the change in place (like the old magicians table cloth trick).

Then I've no hands free to open my wallet to put everything inside - Mean while the cashier is trying to hand me the items I've purchased - I'm not an 'Effing Octopussy.

Is it really too hard to think logicaly for a moment and realize that notes and coins are normally put in different places and that you need hands to do this job.

Also when they give you the change and count backwards like when you are learning maths at 3 years old - it's not 'Effing rocket science to work out how much change you get from a £50 note when buying something for £29.49

"1p to make the 50, 50 to make £30, and here's your £20 note" - really!!!!! thank you for pointing that out, I wouldn't know what I would've done if you didn't eductate me on what 1p looks like!!!!!!!!.

What about when buying something which requires 1p change - what is the 'Effing point???? just sell it for 1p more and save everyone the hassle of having to carry pennies around.

I always hand them the bill(s) clasped between my thumb and index finger, if there is change, it is secluded in my palm to be dropped into their open hand after grabbing the bill(s). This always works out easily for both of us. I always like to have spare change in my pocket, so if a total comes to like, $8.35 I can hand them the $10 with a quarter and a dime in my hand and they take that after receiving the bill, all in the same reach, and then throw it in the register and give me back two bills.

If there's change coming back, I like them to drop the change in my palm, and I then close my pinky, ring, and middle finger around the coins and leave my thumb and index finger open to take the bills. It's a smooth and quick process that works out well if the cashier does it correctly. Sometimes they flop the bill(s) down in my palm and throw the change on top, and then the change slides all around on the bills and I have to fenaggle the change into my pocket with one hand and put the bills back in my wallet. With the change->palm bill->grasp technique, bills can be sorted into my wallet and the change can be dropped into my pocket.

There, I just analyzed the hell outta that process.

for the ones who throw... half are just too stupid to realize it's disrespectful and the other half just don't care to be respectful.

I would say thats pretty rude. Unless the cashier gives the customer attitude or something, tossing money on the counter isn't warrented - esp. if the cashier has their hand out.

On the other hand, I've had this happen to me: The Cashier snatched the money outta my hand as I was counting it to make sure. I considered this pretty rude as well...

Gah this annoys me SO much too.

When I worked in retail for a couple of months, I ALWAYS made sure I handed the change back to the customer in a way that they can sort it out and put it wherever it needs to go.

Yes, that annoyed me (I used to cashier at a Sunoco while in college) too. I think of it as rude, but don't really get all pissy about it, I let it go. Some people just don't know what the etiquette is, or don't realize it's disrespectful.

I think there is a difference between (a) throwing it down on the counter and (b) putting it down on the counter when the cashier is too busy to accept it by hand.

I've worked in the fast food industry for 3 years. I never thought it was rude for someone to kindly get their cash ready and place it on the counter while the cashier is taking another order, getting the food ready, etc. That is the most efficient way of getting the job done rather than rudely demanding that the cashier drop everything else he/she is doing and take your money NOW. It makes things go quicker and smoother for everyone involved - the worker, the customer, and the customers in line waiting.

Honestly I'd give them their change/card back in whatever manner they gave it to me. If they handed it to me nicely, I'd hand it back nicely. If they threw it on the counter and it bounced around and they did it on purpose, that's what I'd do back.

I always place the money on the counter, unless their hand is out for it. I've never thought of it being rude at all. If I slid it at them or threw it, yeah that's rude, but I don't see why just placing the money on the counter would be rude.

I dunno, maybe it comes from being a bank teller for 3 years, where you always get money set on the counter, and rarely handed directly to you.

I concur. (a) is rather rude, (b) is not. Normally though, I choose (c) Have money in hand, be patient enough to wait the five seconds for him/her to finish ringing it up and then extend palm to receive $. :p

I was going to analyze the hell out of the change exchange, but I had a meeting to go to.

Anyways, I agree.

The other day at wendys, I was going through the drive-thru and the guy at the first window handed me the change and bills all at once. So, ofcourse, the change fell onto the floor. It was only a penny, so it didn't bother me much but I was still thinking "wow, this guy is an idiot." I'm guessing he's new there (or on register), since I go there about once a week and I've never seen him before. I went there last night also, and he handed the change back properly. I guess he learned how.

Edit: spelling.
