Rant: Perhaps the worst night EVER.

It sucks but every retail job i've ever had has been the same way. When you're on till close you're on till everything is done for the night. There's a lot of things that can't really be done while the store is open. They can take varying amounts of time depending on the condition of the store. Sometimes that means getting out early sometimes late.

With that attitude you'll probably be treated as "holiday help" and let go shortly after christmas.
 
And people wonder why Mexicans are taking all our jobs. Someone has a perfectly fine job and is complaining about one hour of overtime.

Welcome to real life. Just deal with it. I've worked plenty of 24 hour shifts, or shifts with little time off in between.
 
The worst night EVER would have been if you returned home to find your GF raped and murdered because you were an hour late and not there to protect her. I'd say it was a pretty good night all things considered. Unless you hate your girlfriend.

Now, let me make something clear. For the most part this forum is filled with professionals and technicians or at least engineering students.
If you think this is the place to whine about your teenage angst and get sympathy you may be unpleasantly surprised. Recommend you grow thick skin, or stop posting your problems.

I worked in supemarkets during high school. They did the same thing, but I never really questioned it. I mean, hey, as long as I get paid.

Oh, and I did that alot. Work till 10 pm and open the store at 6:30 -7 am the next day.

That may seem bad now, but try working 80 hours a week for no overtime, staying until 2am and having to be back at 6am the next day. Yep, jobs can suck sometimes. Either suck it up or find a new one. Not trying to be an ass, it's just the way it is.
 
You must be really young. Closing anytime usually means staying after and finishing up. Also I know in a lot of states they can force up to 4 hours of overtime on you a day. You really need to step back and read your own post. You have a terrible work ethic. Young kids like you expecting everything without wanting to work for it worries me for our future.
 
Bahahahaha! HAHAHAHAHAHA! LOLOLOLOL. Wow, I wish you worked for me and I found this thread. You guys are too kind to him with your responses, which I suppose is really nice, since it's Christmas time.

edit: on second thought, the OP has to be a joke, right? Ohhhhh, poooor baby! Had to get the shopping carts from the parking lot! How physically demanding. Maybe you should call in today and tell them that you're too tired from last night. With the lack of sleep that you got, your job performance - pushing shopping carts across a parking lot - is going to suffer. With the few minutes of overtime that you got though, you'll be able to afford some hand lotion for your blistered palms from working soooo hard, and maybe even some tissues to cry into.

On a slightly related note - last summer I worked a couple days at the pizza shop. I wasn't happy with how a wall looked; kind of grungy. And, I heard rumors that the new kid was lazy. I scrubbed half the wall and made him come behind me with towels to dry the wall off. Then, I told him, "okay, see how it's done? Now your turn to clean the rest of the wall." Right when he got to the end, he ran outside and puked from the smell of the cleaning stuff. (Maybe that ammonia was a little too strong? Had I known he was a smoker, I probably wouldn't have mixed it so strong; but then, he'd have had to work even harder.)

I was congratulated by my coworkers for stepping my game up a notch. In the past, when they had whiny kids working for them who wouldn't work hard, I typically made them cry by the end of the first shift I worked with them.

What you just worked is not overtime. Is this your first job?

And for others, like Narse, Overtime is anything over 40 hours a week. It has nothing to do with the amount of hours per day until you hit the 40 hours. You could work 40 hours straight and NONE of it would be overtime.

When I was young, I worked at a pizza joint where on Fridays I would be working untio 3am and then have to be in on Saturday at 7am to start prepping. You're young, you can handle it.
 
I couldn't come up w/ a response last night when I read this because I thought it was a joke. Come to think of it, I really need to work less and get myself a life outside of work. I'm planning on going to more drunken parties after work this coming year.

Actually, that's not quite true. It depends upon how your particular state defines overtime and how the company you're working for defines it, too.

I understand FEDERAL labor laws define OT as anything in excess of 40 hours in a week, but states have the right to more tightly define OT laws. Some states do indeed put OT as anything over 40 hours in a week OR 8 hours in a day. For instance, California is one of those states that regulate OT as hours per week AND/OR hours per day. (Sorta keeps abuse of part time workers from happening.)

So, the blanket statement that OT is only anything over 40 hours in a week isn't quite correct....nor is it quite wrong.

My god. When I was a server, I came in at 9 am and left at 2am every day. Closing time was 12 am. For 2 hours every day, we would close shop. Sweeping, organizing, cleaning.

You have no idea what life is like.
