Rant* Older Houses

We just recently moved out to the country to an older home on 5 acres.
I just hooked up my new 50" plasma and my new Denon 3805 to my Def Techs. I was running the calibration DVD for the TV when my wife started the microwave. POOF! Breaker trips. Part of the kitchen, 1 bedroom and living room are on the same circuit. Good thing I am running a power conditioner. Now I get to run another circuit to my HT.

No. Rewire the entire house. Chances are there are NUMEROUS faults (not to mention a complete and total disregard for organizing things logically)

Rewiring job is simple enough..
I doubt you have a lot of faults
and, I highly doubt it's "a fire hazard" - that's what the breakers are there for.

Welcome to the club. Our house had a fusebox that was apparently replaced sometime in the more recent past. When they did that, they used junction boxes and just kinda connected wires without any regard for logic. So, I too experience popping a breaker and losing power to 2 outlets in the kitchen, an outlet in the living room, 1 in the bedroom, 2 in the dining room, etc.
 
At least you aren't on fuses still 😛

I am thankful that my house was rewired before I moved in. It's all romex and a 100amp breaker (not enough). I have looked at the original wiring in the attic and it's a rat's nest, thank god they cut it all.
 
Yeah, unfortunately an entire rewire is probably necessary. Most likely many previous owners or many add-ons have spliced this to that or added too many outlets to a breaker.

Plus if the wires are cloth covered or aluminum, it's time to re-do it all. $$$ is all it takes....

edit: just re-read and see you have breakers, you can wire new outlets fresh from the box for your hi-tech equipment as long as the rest looks safe.

Your hooking up a 50 incher, plasma no less with new Def Techs. And your complaining because you got to have some wiring re-done on your crib that sits on a nice 5 acres. Man life can really hit you hard at times huh? 😉
 
heh my last house was bought in 1896 it even had "servant rooms".

the last wire job was old. to turn on the lights you Had to turn switches (no flip ones like we have now). also the fuse box was huge. the fuse's were about as big as my hand. it was insane.

so we spent a bunch to re-wire the house. also had to change the heat from oil to propane (when the heater died).

soo mynew house was built in 1985 heh

wich is why you do not buy one of the cookie cutter house's.

my sister has one of these. i can not beleive how poorly it is made and she paid $300k for it!

My house was built by a real contracting company. The Orginal owner built it how he wanted it. though he did some really odd things. such as in the master bedroom it has a small closet (2ft wide 1ft deep) and a huge walk-in closet with AC/heat vent in it. also has pipe running to the wall (thinking he wanted it as a bathroom). In the office there is the same thing. a huge walk-in closet but no pipes but is right next to the first floor bathroom.

There is a closet in a closet of my daughters room (a little closet that goes above the stairs).

 
not like they had 50" tvs back in the day.

you may want to check if your house has knob and tube wiring still. that would suck. if not, wiring is not that hard. I helped my dad wire new breakers all throughout our 110 y/o house throughout my childhood. Good time to re-route breakers so each breaker goes to a section of the house, not something weird like most older houses' breakers do (1 room downstairs, upstairs lights, the garage.. lol, loved rewiring that setup.. summer of 2000)
