One thing to consider with 4 on 4- wouldn't the players union be vehemently opposed to the idea? I mean, that's going from 12 players on the ice to 10. I would assume that rosters would be cut pretty close to proportionally, thereby costing lots of players their jobs. I'd think that even if the GMs were in favor, it would have zero chance in an already tepid collective bargaining times.

More lines, hence fresher players at any given moment (relative to now), hence an improved pace of the game.

If I were in charge, I would...
  • Make the goalies pads smaller.
  • Allow the goalie to play the puck, but don't move the line back. With the goal line moved back, a puck would rarely get around the boards without the goalie reaching it.
  • Make the players shoulder pads smaller and eliminate the plastic in them.
  • Enlarge the ice to Olympic size.
  • Bring back the offsides touch-up rule.
  • Consider the blue line and center line changes only after evaluating the effect of the larger ice surface.
  • Make goalies "fair game" if they are out of the crease.
  • Give more penalty shots to breakaway fouls.
  • Make it illegal to even consider installing a shootout rule after a tie.

They are so popular because they allow fighting, infact they encourage it. Baseball has it right, when there is a fight EVERYONE gets involved. They need more bench clearing fights in hockey.

Fighting is the most cliched and annoying thing to hockey. Go ahead, do all the clean hits you want. Knock a guy on his ass, knock him into the boards, but taking off the gloves and taking it beyond the game is stupid. Fights ruin good games.

Yeah, hockey is one of the few sports left where it isn't about the big bucks and showing off. Every man on the ice has the same chances to make the big plays as everyone else does. That's what I love about it. You don't need to go throwing dumbass rules in there and removing the goalie's skills to make it exciting. What they need to do is just encourage intrest in it by making tickets cheaper, and as someone said network televised games. The reason no one watches much hockey on TV anymore is because THEY DON'T PUT IT ON TV ANYMORE.

Didn't read any of the changes but the league(confirmed by an auditor) lost >$700mil last year.
They feel the need to do something because I suppose lowering salaries isn't the answer [/l]sarcastic[/l]

In an interview with Steve Yzerman, he was very skeptical of that number. He feels that the numbers are skewed, because a lot of the revenue generated the owners aren't calling "hockey" money.

Granted, Stevie Y. is part of the players union and this is a very tense time between them and the owners... But I'll bet he has a very valid point.

Nah, it won't really change icing... It's pretty rare that the goalie will negate an icing call. Pretty much the only example would be if his team was ahead late in the game and he didn't want the clock to stop.

But like I said, that's a fairly rare occurance.

Pretty much agree.

Goalie pads and trappers have become ridiculously large, just check out some footage from the 80's to see the difference.

I don't know about the goalie pads, I'm not a goalie nor do I know any. Goalies not handling the puck might be a bad thing to get rid of. Moving the nets back is a wonderful idea, it was idiotic to move them out in the first place. Getting rid of points and a shootout might be a dumb idea...though it would end each game with a definitive result rather than a "that was dull" feeling. I also don't know about the "tag up" rule, that was hockey before my time.

I still like Bobby Smith's idea of 6 foot wide center and blue lines though.

The problem with olympic sized rinks is you have to tear out seats in a ticket-revenue run league. If you widen the rink, you tear out several rows of the most expensive seats in the building. That could be tens of thousands of dollars lost per game, depending on the team. I like the idea of widening the rink, I just don't think it will ever happen.

not likely, you are losing the cheapest seats not the most expensive.

think about it, just because the rink is made bigger, do you honestly think that they will start charging LESS for ringside seats JUST because the rink was made bigger?? no, they will start at the same price and move back probably at about the same rate as before and really you'll only end up losing the back few rows Pricewise i mean.

Well the big problem is with enlarging any rink is you lose seats. In a gate-reciept driven league, I'm not sure many owners would agree to losing seats at all.
