Rant: Maxtor Hard Drives

New SCSI and the WD Raptor tend to be a little more reliable than IDE drives because use a Fluid Bearing system. Thats why they have a longer warrenty and carry a higher premium. (perform better too)

I've only ever had 2 HDs go bad on me; a 40 gb Maxtor and a 60 gb IBM. My favorite/ most reliable drive brand (IMHO): Seagate, followed by Western Digital.

I can say this for Maxtor: they have the best RMA process I've ever had to use. I had a new drive in 2 days.

I've had about 10 Maxtors and only one went bad after almost 3 years but their newest warranty policy caused me to re-think my last few purchases, which is why I now have WD Special Eds. My history with WD was less than good, but that was years ago. Going to give the SE's a chance now and se how they do.

All current Seagate and some Maxtor and IBM hd's use that on their IDE drives.

I did not know that 😱

If all thse drives died in one system, I'd consider replacing the PSU. Personally I went through 5 IBM 60GXPs before I figured out my antec 300 watter was bad (It seemed perfectly stable except for that). If it's more than one system, get the burliest UPS you can afford. I noticed that my problems with my PSU only happended with IBM 60GXP drives, and seagates and maxtors were fine in that tower (Replacing the PSU did stop the IBMs from dying though). Could be that these maxtors you keep getting are sensitive to whatever spikes or sags you are getting from either the PSU or the line into your room. Maybe check the +- 12/5 volt lines on the PSU?

Well all hd companies have gone to 1 year warrenties unless u buy their 8mb cache drives, then u get the 3 year warrenty.
Strange, since the brand-new Maxtor 120GB/8MB that I bought has only a one-year warranty. Perhaps you mean just the WDSE drives?

all of my Maxtor drives die too... I've never had a problem with WD or Quantum personally... but everyone's findings are different... right now I have 2 WD SE's in my house and they are running sweet.
I am going to try a Seagate next!

Well I can add another to my tally, My 20 GB died yesterday....it wont format, I believe the powermax software said that the SMART was busying out. Luckily the Warranty is until November 2003. So I lost my two hard drives in weeks time. Lost all of my data. This suck, next time I buy a drive, I am getting a Western Digital, and giving them a run for their money.

give WD a try... my 2 800JB's run extremely well... very quiet too 🙂

1 80 GB Seagate
1 40 GB Maxtor
1 2x60 GB Maxtor
1 80 GB Maxtor
1 80 GB Western Digital
3x 120 GB Western Digital SE

none have died yet 🙂

i sold a 40 GB maxtor and a 60 GB so dont know about those but were working fine when sold

Well my newest Maxtor went out today....I was lucky enough to hear it's violent death.....sad, sad, day. 60 GB gone....most of it backed up.....Every single Maxtor drive I have had, has died on me.....luckily I have had them all replaced thru RMA. But still every drive I have had has died on me. Have people had these experiences with Western Digital Drives? I am getting fed up replacing a drive every year, and losing all my data. 🙁

The majority of my hard drives are WD. However, I do have 3 Maxtors and they have proven to be rock solid. If your hard drives are dying that quickly, I would suggest you check for a hardware problem somewhere else. Perhaps your PSU is taking them out?

well the thing is, they arent really dying quickly, they are lasting well over a year....and as for other hardware...all the deaths have happened in different confiurations. So they are not in the same machine. I am constantly upgrading something....probably a new case a year....I like change....I am going to finally invest in a good PSU. i.e. Antec, Enermax...
