ok some background im 19 and never had a job in my life... (spoiled) i helped out my parents from time to time doing entry stuff in their computers when a worker calls in sick.

Anyways, First year of college finally ended a week ago, so i figure instead of bumming around i should get my lazy ass a job.

I must have filled like 30 job applications of entry level work several weeks ago at two malls here in nyc. .. stock/sales GAP, oldnavy, sam goody, macys etc. and NOTHING. ARRG!! I'm thinking about food joints but arrg i hate smelling crap all day long.

sigh just fustrated. Rant over. 🙂
 
You screwed yourself over. It's summer, and all the college students are coming home and applying to the same jobs you're applying for. Problem is a lot of them have prior experience in the field you're applying for so they beat you. Others have work experience in general so they beat you too. If you've never held a job before I'd start considering the "brainless" jobs out there like foodservice. It doesn't necessarily have to be fast food... you could try a server or a chef in a restaurant.
 
Try a temp agency. Sure, they take a cut of your check, but it's better than sitting home. Plus, you might even get some nice administrative jobs.

UK temping agency's don't take a cut off my pay. They pay the agency a premium for a worker as its short notice and temp. I get good pay as its only temp and the agency get a bit on the side from the company. Its all good 😀

It's not that the temp agencies take a cut of your check, its that you will get paid less hourly than full time permanent employees. its normally not a big enough cut to even care. Especially if you need a job.

Frequently temps make more than their full time counterpart due to lower costs associated with them - no medical, paid time off, etc, etc, etc.

So sad...I've applied to a couple places for the summer. I have limited job experience..but I HAVE worked before. No one has called me back about my application...not even a slight interest from them...


Sucks...I applied relatively early too... 🙁
 
I hope I can find a job. I have to find one in the next couple of weeks.
 
Many people have never heard of temp agencies and think going around applying is the way to go. Unfortunately, that doesn't work much anymore. I used a temp agency and have had many jobs. In fact, my last job started off with a temp agency and then the company hired me on and I was off the temp agency. I worked there for 3 yrs.

And yes, your job with a temp agency will be less pay than if you had been hired by the company itself. Better to have a job with lower pay than no job at all though. It's a start.
 
Retail stores and grocery stores are good bets, thats were i got my first 2 jobs (Walmart, A&P) . Also if you got to College, there are alaways jobs at the Helpdesk's, or Computer Labs for students (3rd Job).
 
Summer jobs I had as a student:

mail clerk at an oil company
mowed lawns (most profitable summer job I've ever had)
lifeguard at pool
tree trimmer
toy store morning stock boy
repo man

 
Given the turnover rates at those types of jobs, keep checking back with the places you filed applications. It's very likely something will turn up if you're persistent.
