rant/impressions with Microsoft

so i had just swapped out some parts on my rig late last night and was in the process of reformatting. When I had everything installed, I tried to reactivate windows. Normally, I click on the activate over the internet icon and it's all taken care of in 30 seconds. This time, however, i was told i have exceded my quota of reactivation times and i would have to call microsoft to activate my copy of xp home. It was already 12:30AM and i didn't think they'd have anybody available but i called anyways and to my surprise, they had representatives available to take my call. I had to explain to them that i was just reformatting my computer after installing some new parts and that i've only used this copy of windows for my own computer etc. The lady gave me a confirmation ID and I was able to reactivate my copy.

Out of curiosity though, i asked if i'd have to call every time i want to activate my copy from now on and she said yes.

Here's my rant: I know Microsoft is trying to stop piracy and all but when it gets to the point where it wastes 30 minutes of my time just to activate a copy of windows that I legitamitely own and never installed on any computer but my own, that's crossing the line. Plus, I could be installing it on 10 other computer and call every time and tell them its only on one computer. . . it'd be a PITA but how are they going to confirm whether or not i'm using it on one computer? I'm not saying thats what i'm going to do but I just feel like the phone call doens't accomplish anything but waste my time. I am, however, impressed that they had someone taking calls at 12:00 AM.

if you reinstall windows on that same computer MS"s computers already have that config on record so you won't have to call.

what is a pain in the ass is that i have a perfectly valid copy of office, i use it on one computer, but because that computer has been such a bitch recently i've reinstalled windows several times. now office is popping up saying i've used the CD key for office too many times. wth?

i have beef ... why the hell is their stupid software so expensive?? i was looking into open volume licensing for our company today and it costs 2-3x as much to equip each computer with wxp pro and office 2003 small business than to actually buy the full computers... am i the only one that finds this outrageous?

i have no problem with activation . . its the reactivation that sux . . . they never made me call to reactivate windows. I was always able to reactivate it over the itnernet even aftre i changed the motherboard, graphics card and processor . .. it was never an issue until last night when i apparently reactivated one time too many and now they want me to call andt ell them that its my computer and that i only have that cd key used on one computer. . . PITA

2 time sthe last month or so . . . i dunno how many times i've reformatted in total . . i'd say probabyl 5-10 times
