<< A Dell P4? I'm guessing it's a Dimension 8100? >>

Yep! I love it! i got it for really cheap during a sale well worth the $1400 i spent on it.

<< I build this PC (Duron 600, MSI K7T Pro, SB 128 PCI) from scratch. I didn't install the 4-in-1 drivers and this system is rockstable.

The K7T Pro uses the VIA KT133 chipset, BTW.

PS: I agree that the SB Live! is junk. I know very few people who actually like this card or can get their system stable with this POS installed.
>>

Ditto. Built my first home-made rig this summer on an Epox EP-8KTA3, installed the 4in1s, and everything worked beautifully. AFTER I ripped my SB Live out, that is. never could get the thing to work. No sound out of it at all. Don't think it affected stability that much - I had it in here for a few days while I tried to get it to work - and didn't have any crashing problems.Hate to say it, but it looks as though that SB Live may be (at least part of) the problem.

Yet another thread about someone who doesn't read a FAQ first when installing a new box. Steps for any system to be stable:

1. Reinstall the OS.
2. Install chipset specific drivers.
3. Install drivers for video/audio etc.

For VIA based boards, you need the VIA 4in1 from www.viatech.com. Its a pretty important thing to do, otherwise performance will be horrible, stability won't exist, etc. When WinXP includes the VIA drivers for their most popular boards, it'll be cake for anyone to get XP running since they won't have to install the drivers for their chipset.

Why on earth would someone want to reinstall the OS? I delete all the Drivers (for the old chpset and the other peripherals) and let Windows reinstall them plus I install the Drivers for the New chipset. I've done it hundreds of times and I have yet to run into any major complications

<< Yet another thread about someone who doesn't read a FAQ first when installing a new box. Steps for any system to be stable: >>

ive never had to install chipset drivers for any of the intel boxes i have put together, and ive put together over a 1000 boxes.

Amesh: when I install Win95 on any motherboard with the "super south bridge" (read: 430HX, VX, TX, all 440...) I have to install the Intel patch to have Win95 see the CDROM drive.

<< and all those boxes were on many many different motherboards >>

You mean you never installed chipset Drivewrs for i810 and i815 Motherboards? Man I'm glad I don't have to do tech support for the boxes you build.

Well I have a kt7-raid (yes, the original, with a later bios), in my game rig below (sb live, gf2 gts, winME, Diamond Fireport 40 dually UW scsi card, etc etc etc) and I have no problems.....
running latest via drivers.

Do'h well, computers aren't easy to setup for everyone 😉 😛 :Q 😀

Why'd you get the 950mhz? You should have got the 1.2ghz or something like that? Buying a 950mhz for a main computer now is useless 🙁 Should have went with an EPoX mobo too 😀

Umm... uh...

I've never met anyone who's put together 1,000 boxes and been as ignorant as you are.

I don't believe you at all.

If you truly had the experience of ONE THOUSAND computers under your belt, why did you have to ask your friends for advice? "I asked people and they said go with ASUS with a non-ALi chipset".

Stop lying, first. Admit you don't know what you're talking about. This is rediculous.

What about all the newer 840 and 840 boards? What about the Win95B patches for BX chipets? I certainly remember those patches, when I had those machines. Nothing worse than installing Windows 95 OSR2, then having to install the BX patches to get the board up to snuff for speed/reliability.

If you don't want to bother installing drivers for chipsets, then stick with BX boards and Win98. Heck, look at the new Intel chipset for P4. It won't be out until next year, do you think Win98 will have the proper driver? How about Win2k? I think you'll need to patch that OS with a chipset driver as well to get proper performance.

Ditto what red said. Ameesh, you're looking more and more like an ID-10-T user the more you post.

"I bought an athlon 950 and it sucks... what are 4 in 1 drivers?"
"I build lots of intel systems... and never install no stinking chipset drivers!"

Maybe it's time to RTFM! Actually, just insert the cd that comes with intel or via motherboards, follow the instructions and try not to hurt yourself! 😉

I just built my bro a duron system and it was so freaking easy to build compared to my BP6 setup which is a BX board.

After reading through this thread and watching you ask things like, "what are 4 in 1s" basically says to me you don't know what you are doing. You don't have anyone to blame except yourself.

its not a main box, my p4 is. the movers broke my old system during transit so the insutrance company said go get it repaired, i said ok a picked a middle priced system, i thought id try an athlon cause i wasnt spending any money on it and soo many people seem to like it.

of the 1k boxes 0 have been amd boxes thats why i asked, i worked in a computer store for 5 years when i was younger all i did was put together systems and burn them in.

<< i worked in a computer store for 5 years when i was younger all i did was put together systems and burn them in. >>

That must have been a few years ago. Ever since the 810 came out, installation of chipset drivers have been standard for intel boards. Your P4 has them, but Dell installed them for you.

The Athlon system can be a great box, but you need to install the 4 in 1 drivers to get it stable. Don't give up on it yet! 😉 You can get them here:

Good luck.

also i rarely use old OS on new systems, so no i would not have tried win95osr2 with a Pentium 3 or 4, so i guess i dont run into the same problems as you guys do, i tend to use the lastest version of windows out.

Damn unstable athlons....

if you trying to impress me your way off, i have had my (very active) servers up for months it was domain server as well as a file server and web server 24 days is pocket change.

btw if thats a dev box thats a load of crap.

I have built quite a few AMD systems in past few years, every single one of them is very stable. I also use an A7V133 (kt133a) with a tbird 1000 in my production web server. It has been up (no reboots of any kind) since I upgraded it: current uptime: 101 days. That system is perfectly stable and you cannot argue against that.

Anyways, follow the advice in this thread and you will have a perfectly functioning AMD system 🙂

<< all i did was put together systems and burn them in. >>

OK I understand. When we assemble systems for School Districts, Government Agencies and Businesses I usually config one or two systems(including the Chipset Drivers), ghost the Drive and copy the config to the rest of the drives before the trained monkeys put the systems together.

ive wiped my P4 about a half a dozen times and i didnt install any extra drivers (not in win2k pro, server or XP). I will try the 4in1.

101 days is impressive, ill put in the drivers.

i agree i was definely a trained monkey but i was a 12 year old monkey who thought it was the coolest thing ever 🙂 now i do more interesting things. and the drives were still 'shirinked wrapped' when i put them in so they were clean from the manufacturer.
