Rant: Hiring and training people really sucks.

So I'm trying to grow my photography business by hiring a photographer and a photo processor.

The photographer cost me $400 a day for a few days in lost income while I trained him, and in the end he just couldn't shoot straight and was SO slow that we had to let him go. Now we're starting all over again.

The photo processor didn't have a good attention to detail and I had to go back and re-process lots of photos, completely negating the purpose of her position which is to free up my time. She's a photographer too. And despite the fact that I said it was an evening job, she told me she couldn't keep doing it after less than a week because she has stuff to do in the evenings. So now I'm starting all over again with the photo processor too!

Fuck me.... wow, talk about hemorrhaging money.
 
I'll process your photos? I worked in a photo lab STRICTLY processing photos for a couple years. i only did shoots once in a while as a backup photographer for weddings and stuff.

Hire me. I know nothing about photography or photo processing, but at least you know that going in, so your expectations are reasonably low.

I'm definitely going to try to offshore to India. Should be able to leverage the time differential to my advantage as well as the cost. Sorry Americans, but it just makes sense to me.

yeah kind'a gotta agree with this, but there are some options you can also consider. Look at nearby camera stores (dedicated stores) and talk with the salepeople. See if they can recommend someone who is an avid photographer to start with. Look at nearby college that have some photography classes and talk with the profs there, see if they have promising students that are looking for a job, of if they know someone personally. A bit of a longer option.........work with the local commerce agency to see about organizing a local photography contest (downtown businesses, local sports, spring colors, etc). Include a minor cash prize, with you being on the judging panel. That way you can connect the photos with the people and can see who has an eye for composition, impact, balance, "focus", etc.. Another thing i'm seeing more of; when i'm doing weddings, the florist who helped on the flowers wanted to know if they could see some of the prints where the flowers were central or dominant in the setting, so that they could request copies of them for their shops. Other florists may have an informal list of qualified local amateur shooters who do the occaisional weddings, and may be interested in your opening.

I cant find one damn qualified candidate in my area. At this point if a guy could spell "command line" I'd hire him on the spot.

Uhhh... there actually aren't that many qualified people.

Graduates from the state college photography programs with absolute crap portfolios that make me wonder if schools even take an artistic eye into consideration.

People without the necessary qualifications.

People from far far away even though I state they must be local.

People who can't properly read the ad.

People who apply for a photography job without a portfolio - wtf?

And of the ones I interview, it appears leveling the camera so vertical walls are perfectly vertical is a super difficult task.
 
To offset some of the costs with that you could see if you could set up a non paid internship through a localish arts college/ program.
 
If you can't find the perfect candidate, get an intern. See if they have the basics down, make sure they're teachable, then pay.

We should raise the minimum wage to $30/hr so OP can't afford to hire anyone. Living wage!

Nah, we should get rid of the minimum wage, raise YOUR taxes to pay for all of the new welfare recipients and then maybe the masses of poor can break into your palace and steal all of your shit while beating the living hell out of you. That would be priceless.
