If only...<sigh>

those days are LONG gone...thanks a fuck of a lot, George..

I don't want to make this a P&N thread, but what did good ol' George do that resulted in high gas prices? I'm not really biased, just uninformed and curious. I already hear people blaming Obama for high gas prices (not unexpected in my area of the country), but I'm not sure why they're doing that either. I guess I need to pay more attention to the news if I'm going to make a habit of wondering about these things...

I believe gas prices in Canada are even worse, right now it's 77 cents a litre for regular. ouch!

Those were the days. :\

Going for $1.20/litre now in Toronto. Not quite as bad as the Hurricane Katrina days, but it's getting up there. The only thing that's not going up in value is my paycheque. 🙁

How is this possible? There are stores and restaurants within walking distance? How do you get groceries and items from shopping home?

I work downtown and go to school downtown, so I decided to move downtown.

School is a 5 minute walk and work is a 15 minute walk.

There is a grocery store 2 miles away that's accessible by bus, which runs about every 20 minutes. My bus pass costs $8.34/month for unlimited use.

There are a TON of restaurants within a 10 minute walk from my front door and way too many to list. Pizza, Italian, Chinese, Vegan, Thai, Mexican, Sandwich Shops, etc.

I don't have a washing machine or dryer but there is a laundry facility at the end of my street (2 minute walk). There is also a hair salon and a corner store there as well (the corner store is really expensive so I don't really shop there, but it's there in a pinch if I really need something now).

Everything else I buy online. Amazon prime gets stuff to me in 2 days which is reasonable enough.

Because it's the cool thing to do... blame the president when shit goes wrong.

so it increased by 0.17 - it'll barely make a dent in your costs unless you drive a metric shitton or your expenditures on gas are a significant fraction of your income.

my mom freaked out when gas jumped by 0.3/gal... and i was like "mom, that's a few bucks extra per fill, and maybe a few hundred *at most* over the course of the next year"

of course i didn't say that to her, hehe

I remember filling up for 77 cents/gallon in the summer of 98. I started driving in 96, so that was the cheapest I had ever filled up at.

Gas shot up a quarter here in the last couple days. I'm thinking about trading up to a Prius if gas goes on the north end of $4/gallon.

I remember 25 cents a gallon.

I was pumping gas at an Esso station in New York before the 1973 Oil Embargo.

Back then also washed the Wind screen and checked the oil level.

Pruis is a waste of money. Get a cheap car like a Ford Focus or Honda Civic which already gets great gas mileage plus you don't need to pay a hybrid tax.

Yeah this thread brings back memories. I remember when I was in college in the late 90s that I could fill up my tank for less than $10. Gas has increased tremendously since then yet beer prices have remained somewhat constant. No wonder college was more affordable back then. 😛

I take it you dont have a family to buy food for, or a mortage company to write a check too every month, oh and lets not forget about the utility bills, or the slew of other unexpected bills that come in over that year. yea a few hundred bucks is a big deal to me and a lot of otehr people including your mom. it adds up and not just at the pump or are you too ignorant to know this?

More links to inflation adjusted prices. He was talking about 1973 dollars not 2005+ dollars

Edit - I just saw the first link has nominal prices. Still if the average was 39 cents a gallon it can't be such a stretch to see some places at or close to 25 cents during that same period. Even today where I live gas prices are a full dollar below places like California.
