Rant: Frames and Lenses for these stupid glasses

I made a thread a while back about how expensive glasses are. This was especially true because I was buying frames and lenses from a small shop that seems to charge a lot.

ATOT recommended that I find somewhere else to get the lenses done. The shop where I got my frames doesn't allow refunds (and I had already paid for the lenses), but they made an exception, and I had the lenses done at Fred Meyer, thus saving around $100.

Fast forward a month. I got my glasses back from Fred Meyer, lenses and all. Yay! Except that they are a little crooked. So I took them into Fred Meyer to get them adjusted. She takes a look and realizes that the screw holding the bottom of the frame to the top of the frame (which also holds the lens in place), appears to be stripped, because it won't stay in. Fred Meyer doesn't have this brand of frames, so they recommend that I take them to the shop where I got the frames originally to get a new screw, and have them adjusted there.

So I do.

They take one look and the immediate reaction is, "Wow! They sure fucked these up!". The bottom of the frame where the screw enters is beat up pretty bad like someone struggled with it. Nothing terrible, but noticeable cosmetic damage. And it turns out that the screw is fine, but it's the inside of the frame that is stripped.

Whoever did the lenses made them too big, and to try and make things work, they over tightened the screws to try and bind the frame, and stripped in the inside threading. Great.

So at this point, I see where this is going. Not good.

Instead of playing the blame game a bunch, I asked them what the best way to remedy this would be. They tell me that I will probably need new frames. Of course, if I had gotten the lenses from them, they would have replaced the frames without any questions (doh). Despite me cancelling my lens order with her shop, she tells me to just leave the frames and lenses with her, and she would personally call Fred Meyer to try and work it out.

An hour or so later, I get a call from the frame shop. She called Fred Meyer. They, of course, don't like being blamed, and inform her that I had signed a form removing them from any responsibility associated with damage to the frames. My fault for not reading all of the fine print, I guess.

I called Fred Meyer myself, after this, and she said that the best she could do was call her corporate office to see if they could make an exception. Even if they do, though, she thinks they will only get me frames from their store, not replace the ones I paid several hundred dollars for.

This whole thing has me so bummed out. I know this rant sucks. It's just one of those things I needed to air out.

TL;DR:
Tried to save money on lenses so I took my new (expensive) frames to Fred Meyer.
They made the lenses to big and damaged, probably ruined, the frames.
Nobody wants to pay for it.

If they can't fix it for you, drop me a PM.

basically if you're willing to ship them to me (NYC), then pay for the shipping back. since the chances are it's a minor fix if only the holes are stripped.

doubt that's all that's wrong - the lenses are too big for the frames

OP - do you have the prescription? have you tried any of the online glasses places?

Glasses is the one thing I will never skimp on. I know a good guy who's a little more expensive than the chains but he does good work. He warranties them for life too. Had one lens crack around the mount (frame-less) and he replaced it no charge.

My parents on the other hand both go to big chain shops to save money. Each time, their glasses barely last a year before the anti-glare coating flakes off. My mom's are scratched to shreds even though they're supposedly scratch resistant, and she doesn't abuse them.

hey superspy, did anyone tell u about these 2 sites:

eyebuydirect.com
zenni optical

been buying from those 2 places for years (yeah yearly company reimbursement eyecare plan). big selection.

edit:
for b&m, i've used costco and walmart in the past b4 i found the online sites. i would go to them if i just wanted new lens.
but it's still cheaper to have new FRAMES and lens from the online sites i mentioned

about $20 (frame + lens combined) +$5 shipping!

You could always threaten small claims court if both places tell you tough shit.

Mmntech - my workplace increased my flex funds to $750 this year. After all the copays for urgicare, doctors, etc., I still have $550 left. I'm planning on spending 100% of that on glasses. That'll get me about 30 pairs of glasses.

Do you own a shop of your own?

The woman who owns the shop where I got the frames said she could sell me a new pair of frames for half off ($150), and fix the lenses for another $150. If this could be done cheaper I would be thrilled...

ugh that story pisses me off, sorry to hear of the hassle.

I bet you'll think twice about listening to ATOT now though 😛

no i just work in one. just costs shipping so sure beats 300!

if the screw hole is just stripped and not broken, the lenses just too big and aren't chipped or cracked should be a simple job.

+1. I will never skimp. My last pair before insurance were $1100, $450 after ins (titanium and carbon fiber frame, Zeiss free form progressive lenses). My vision and comfort is not something Im willing to scrimp on.

My last eye exam, frames, and lenses w/antiglare were <10% of that cost pre-insurance and they're the best glasses I've had since I started wearing in 1994.

Ya seriously....no use being short sighted 😉

From someone who has 2 $500 pairs of ray-ban normal glasses and a $7 pair of zennioptical glasses, I wear the zennioptical ones.

I bought my prescription glasses from Zennioptical. They sell glasses for about 1/10 the price of most optometrist’s stores that I've ever seen. I paid 30 dollars for a stylish pair of glasses which I am still wearing after 1 year.
