i.e. rosie o'donnell, dr. phil, tom cruise, mel gibson, etc.

it's SOOOO goddamn old. really. it's not funny anymore.

honestly, what have they done other than have a differing opinion about issues than you? it's not like they go around CONSTANTLY preaching or doing bad things in the world.

yeah, tom cruise went on a little diatribe about medication with matt lauer... ok? so what. he's also a scientologist. ok... wowwie. he's not doing anything that actually affects anyone negatively.

and what's the deal with hating rosie? just because she's a loud/annoying lesbian or something? is it because you're a HUGE fan of bill o'reilly or donald trump or something?

i just don't get the obsession with constantly bashing a celebrity you know nothing about except for the fact that other people dislike them...

let me give you an example of what i'm talking about:

he doesn't shove it down anyone's throat. he hardly even talks about it except for maybe a couple times... and whenever he does talk about it, it's in order to explain his answer to a certain question. big deal if his beliefs are out there... they're his beliefs. who cares? has he come to your house and jumped on your furniture or tried to convert you to scientology?

as far as i know, he's a human being (with his own personal life and beliefs) who's really good at his job.

Dr. Phil is somewhat annoying, and he doesn't always exactly give the best or healthiest advice; he says what people want to hear, and thus the reason he's so popular.

As for Tom Cruise, from what I've read, scientology as a whole does at times attempt to act against, what I feel, are the best interests of society. He supports them vehemently, hence the reason I've lost quite a bit of respect for him.

oh? do tell.

actually, i'm pretty sure that dr. phil is popular because his show is based on common sense. that's why some people don't like him, or so i thought... because he's getting rich off of having a show where idiots with no common sense are being told something any average person can say. either way... who cares? he's making a living just like anyone else.

This is true, but when you're attempting to put yourself forth as a mental health professional, you have an obligation to practice methods that have been shown effective, or at least efficacious. Because of your position, your advice generally carries more weight than would a person not in your place, and as such should be judged accordingly.

However, I haven't watched more than one or two of his shows, so I can't say I disagree with everything he recommends. Nor can I say I don't like the guy.

Well, I'm sure many people have heard the tales of the Hubbard tactics regarding false advertising (i.e. purporting to offer services to individuals who, and I'm not fully sure on the condition, were suffering from maybe dementia, only to bombard them instead with attempts at conversion). However, these might just be unsubstantiated or exaggerated claims.

Though Hubbard, and scientology as a whole, have made their stance clear in terms of mental health. In terms of the statement I made, the one example that immediately springs to mind concerns a learning center that Tom Cruise, and scientology, had just opened. While I greatly respect any attempts made to battle such difficulties as learning disorders, Tom Cruise basically said in the interview that they were shunning all current, "traditional" approaches, which were "more harmful than helpful," if I recall correctly. Instead, he mentioned something about a scientology-specific approach designed to remedy various learning problems.

Don't get me wrong, I'm never against the development of new methods or strategies; I just like to see proper empirical support substantiating both the negative claims regarding current methodologies, and the positive claims regarding scientology's. I have thus far been able to find neither.

you don't get it do you. you don't have to do something specifically to me for me to dislike you. What if my friend called me right now to tell me he just got punched by a guy on the street, i don't know that guy, never did anything to me, so should i be cool with him? no i am going to be pissed and drive there to help my friend.
These people hasn't done anything specifically to us, but doesn't mean you can't dislike them based on what you do know about them, hear about them, and the things they say. Tome Cruise has said MANY stupid things. He called up that one news show who was doing a piece on eleroshock therapy. He called up actling like an expert and saying how it is wrong and his "religion" says so etc. See that is at least one time where he went out of his way to impose his stupid beliefs on others and spoke as if he was a medical expert. Yes i hate him for it, no matter how well he acts.

Also, I'd have to disagree with the basic premise of your original post. While I'd never suggest that anyone should dislike another person simply because it's trendy, isn't the main reason one person dislikes another generally because their opinions and views of the world differ? The opinions you hold, and how you choose to express them, are as pertinent a portion of your personality as is anything else you do; hence, if you disagree with those aspects in another, you're going to dislike the person as a whole.

Someone doesn't have to do something to actually directly harm another person in order to warrant being disliked by him/her.

meh, he says what oprah fan women want to hear, thats why he's popular. i find oprah annoying and fake, so her toadie dr phil is dead to me as well.

basically the public pays for these people with ticket sales/viewership, so we can b*tch all we want.

as for scientology,i don't really care. they are the small fish, the big fish are off limits apparently. no scientologists are cutting peoples heads of on camera or blowing up pizze parlors buses flying planes into buildings hating on the gays etc.

I've disconnected myself a lot, and I find that pop culture doesn't annoy me nearly as much as it used to. The TV is only on for video games, or the occasional movie or TV show. I never watch the local news anymore. I rarely listen to the radio in the car, just my MP3 player.

ATOT is really the only place where I find out about stuff. I probably never even would've known about the Michael Richards thing if I hadn't read about it here, and then watched the clip on YouTube.

Dr phil does not bother me. Tom cruise is just nuts. that little blowup with the medication was silly. he really has no clue as to what he is talking about yet telling people that they should not take medication they need. to many women have killed themsevles or others while suffering post delivery depression.

as for Rosie she is a hypricrit. she ambushed Tom selleck (I think it was him) on her show rosie a few years ago about guns. he is a hunter and gun collector. she said NOBODY has the need for a gun. then a few weeks later her bodygaurd was nailed for a conceled carry issue. when asked about it her reply was something like "well normal people have no need of a gun. i do"

there are other things about her also. I used to like her. but over the years her personality and some of what she has said has changed my mind.

and as red dawn said she has a bigger dick then i do :(

Do you know anything about scientology? I haven't watched a cruise movie in years due to his affiliation and monetary support for that pyramid scheme cult. Of any "religion" of the world I really feel that that one ranks among the most manipulative in recent events. I don't really like any major form of Christianity (I do believe in God though, just not the Bible or any churches) or many other major religions, because I feel they are manipulative, but Scientology seems to have taken it to a whole other level.

Lets not even get into the fact that he's an utter tool and that he rails on a subject (psychology and psychiatry) that he has no knowledge of and cannot understand. Both have helped more people than his stupid religion ever will. All sciences have a "dark ages" where things aren't perfect and he fails to understand that while spreading disgusting FUDD.

A dollar for Cruise is at least some money for Scientology and that I just cannot support.

I can't stand Dr. Phil because he just seems like an idiot who tries to pass himself off as a great psychologist, when in fact he isn't.

Most of all, I cannot stand people who say I can't make opinions on Celebs just because they think the idea is popular. Disliking people's disliking of celebs is very hypocritical.

There are many valid reasons to not like Rosie. For one thing, she's a nasty objectionable person who is rabid about her illogical, hate-filled, and elitist political views. For another, she has frequently attacked person(s) unreasonably for the sake of her little causes. For example, when she attacked Tom Selleck back on her show over his libertarian views on gun rights. Or... when she caused the movie Fight Club to tank at the box office by revealing the ending of the movie on her show just prior to the movie's release. I could go on and on here. However, I don't hate her, I just think she should be ignored into obscurity. That would be the worst possible fate for her.

She actually did that? I mean, I didn't really like Fight Club, but that seems pretty lame to do :/. I remember watching Saw III after someone pretty much spoiled the entire movie for me earlier... after that it was just a bunch of gore.

Hating Tom Cruise is valid; and should be our new national past time! Don't say that he doesn't harm anyone...have you ever seen him act?

If you want a decent enough plot to be wrecked by incompetence, hire Tom Cruise. (As hard as he tried, however, he still couldn't wreck "Magnolia")
