oh and i forgot to mention, tech support is NOT what i'm getting paid for. it's something i do with a smile on my face out of the goodness of my heart every time, cause i'm here to build new computers (in the process of), build a new server, set everything up and then start working on other stuff like making standardized templates for common forms etc. now this kinda stuff just detracts me form my work but i've been trying to be really nice and not let them know what idiots i think they are!

Welcome to IT...
this is how the real world is...
15 years doign this and those same BS calls every day...
QFT. Those who *stay* in the industry call it "job security", sink or swim?

I bailed out of IT after finding out this is what it's like. Not the career for me 🙂

I'll chime into the ubiquitous "Get used to it" chant. Don't let the occasional loser-user detract from your attitude, or everyone will see you as the pr!ck who always sighs, then quickly types in a solution.

Called real life. Imagine the frustration mechanics feel when someone brings in a car that has never had the oil changed .... everyone deals with this.
Yup, choose a new job/profession if you don't like it man. There are more morons than normal people out there 😉

then you need to be straightforward with your boss (even if it is your dad... that his nepotism and he'll have to work through it) and explain that you were not hired as day-to-day tech support. If that is going to be part of your daily job description going forward, then you need to decide if that is what you want...

funny that you mention that... i just finished dinner with my parents and over a couple drinks me and my dad talked about how stupid and 'non-dynamic' some of the ppl at his office are and he is actually considering sacking some ppl in the near future if they don't show him that they are worth it...

I would say everyone gets to ask stupid questions once. Some people just don't have much experience with computers. It never surprises me.

If they ask more than once, thats when I'd get mad. If the same person killed their computer with Kazaa spyware twice in a row, thats when I'd slap them.

what about cloggy up their computer so badly with spyware that it takes 4-5 hours to clean up, and then you get to do it all over again a month later?

Got his one last week

"My computer won't respond, it's compeltely screwed"

went downstairs, took a 5 second look then lifted the woman's paperwork off the keyboard. fixed.

Got a funny related store, i did tech support for a college, and all the pcs gaps had to be taped up because so many COLLEGE students mistaken them for the "CDROM HOLEY THINGY"
I mean we are talking about kids that grew up in the computer age

lol, I've done that a couple of times on my own computers. Some of mine have slot loads, others are trays, and some just have a big empty space since I'm can't find the bezel.

I agree with you whole-heartedly about the frustrations of IT work. Hence I decided to leave the field. But my stance at some point became viewing computer illiterate as just that, illiterate.

Do I mock those who can't read and write? No, I help them and volunteered at a library once upon a time. It is a vital life skill that they somehow missed. Just like computers are these days. So while I completely agree with the frustrations, I got a lot personally out of stepping back and looking at the situation objectively.

Past equating it to adult illiteracy, you could similarly compare it to a child not knowing how to do X,Y, or Z. Some people/children were just not taught something or another. It happens, 'teach a man to fish...' type thinking might be helpful. Blame the parents, society, and the person for failing to realize at some poit that 'oh snap, maybe I should figure out this whole computer thingy.'

But god, oh god, sometimes you just wanna take that mouse cord and wrap it around their 'I didn't know I shouldn't open e-mail attachment' necks. Though with bluetooth and other wireless mice being the rage now a days, what might I use?

/ciao

Get used to it.

You'll also have the users that think you should be the master of all software applications ever created because you're the computer guy.

yes!! i get that too, and when i don't know how to use some obscure CAD program the people i'm trying to help are like "you built your own computer how do you not know this?!?"

maybe hes trying to give you a heads up before he drops the big one on you 😉

lol maybe 😛 😀

well we both know that my working here is a short-term thing... i wanted to take some time off school and he had a bunch of computer-related work to be done at the office and so it just seemed like the logical thing to do... i'd hate to do this for a living though...

The guy I work for is totally, irreversably computer illeterate. His answer to every computer related problem is "I hate goddamn computers". Be glad you don't have to deal with that attitude as well as 9 other incompetents who barely know how to turn one on.

You have no idea how many times I've been called up at home after work hours because there was a crisis that involved an unplugged monitor or hub.

the "box thingy that's not the monitor thingy" has many names to users, most common are the "cpu", i've also heard it called "the hard drive"
