i have avg on two systems and I have never gotten a popup asking to update to the newest version?
I get the updating window everytime i start my machine, but never a request to buy something. Did I do something right/wrong to not get em?

I have AVG on my current machine. It works fine. Automatic updates, no pop ups and, no ads other than a small banner if I manually launch the scanner. The system automatically scans in the background every twelve hours.

It's not a typical spyware/adware popup. It's built into the AVG free version and when it updates itself, sometimes it opens a new IE window promoting the pay-for product. But whatever. I never have any issues with AVG and will continue to use it until they decide to no longer support or update the definitions for the free product.

Uninstall IE then. I have firefox and opera installed too and it never comes up with those. I would guess those that don't have IE or don't have it set as the default don't see the popups. I see one or two a year from AVG...when they release a new "pay for" product. Oh well. I'm not going to flip out about it.

I use avg, no complaints here. Im running zonealarm too. as well as spybot and adaware. plus spyware terminator. plus the one that microsoft uses. man i seem paranoid.

lol, is there anything you won't click on?

I've been using AVG for a month or two and I haven't had a single pop up. It just updates every day when I wake up and turn it on.

Nothing beats Symantec but it isn't free.

hmm...it's not april 1st any more...what gives?

Well he is half-right ... it isn't free! 😛

Another vote for Avira here ... aside from the pop-up at update time it leaves you alone & offers protection very close to that of Kaspersky.
The only serious negative is that it doesn't offer real-time scanning of POP-email so if you need that feature Avast is the best you can do.

popups = spyware = porn = fail

The other week I cleaned a computer for a friend and he asked me why I didnt have near as much trouble with my machine and I replied "because I dont look at near as much porn as you do".

This coming from a guy who completely filled his HD with porn videos and was excited to send me the "two girls one cup" video lol.

I look at porn all the time; I don't download the 300 KB LimeWire videos that are obviously NOT PORN. A friend gave me a computer to fix that wouldn't even allow me to get online. AVG said it found like 400 viruses, quite a few of them were trojans and backdoors and shit, and then HijackThis found a few other things that were taking control of IE. A quick look through his LimeWire folder explained it all 😛

On topic, I got Kaspersky for free off SlickDeals, I like it more than AVG Free.

Anti-Vir works good for me, they just have a pop-up ad every update.

I never have that problem, because I have my firewall kill it 😉

i just realized something a little earlier about the two pcs i mentioned before (main vs. htpc) that both use avg 7.5... the one that gets the "buy avg" browser opened is using IE6. the one that doesn't get it is using IE7. it could just be coincidence though.

i've seen this once, but not on my personal system.

&&& lol at who would put anything from symantec on their computer.

talk about bloatware/shitware, its the mack daddy.

Ive seen the popup maybe once on my main system and once on one HTPC. Popup came up with firefox on the main system and in IE on the HTPC. Second HTPC has gotten no popups.

Loooong time Avast user, and very happy with it. It might not offer the granular control like some of the other apps, but it is small, effective and doesn't use much in the way of resources. Updates without any issues. I'm a happy user and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.....

I get forefront front work now, used to be etrust. I use whatever they give me for free...... But etrust was terrible.

It's probably a coincidence. I use Firefox as my default browser, and get the upgrade ad pop-ups from a Firefox window.
