To me, it seems, here in ATOT, that there is a general elitist attitude, held among most members, of "if you do not agree with me, you are wrong and btw YOU ARE AN IDIOT so fvck off and go back and hug your trees/go and blow things up all over the world"

For this to be an effective rant, and for you to be convincing, you need to back up your complaint with an example or two.

read any religious, middle-east, or political affliated thread here on ATOT.

Most of the time,the 1st 20 or so replies or so are actual opinions pertaining to its subject, but afterwards, its either the athiest lobing flames at the religious or conservatives personal attacking the liberals or vice versa.

anyways, i think it is because this... you can do it with like 3 people... but when you have a couple thousand people... there will always be those who are not in the mood for a serious discussion. and even if you beg them not to, there is no guarantee that they will see your begging. so it is basically unavoidable...

If there is any disagreement of any kind on HardForum, the thread is killed.
 
Generally speaking people who call you names are just practicing their own. The rules are very simple. If somebody attacks you instead of your point, or remarks about how stupid your point is, you win. It means they have nothing of substance to say to counter your point. If it's a really good point you will be called incomprehensible, confusing, or showing off how smart you think you are. If it's a really really good point you will be accused of taking drugs. It it's a superlative point they will ask you to share your bong with them. Pay no attention to it. Most of the people that will try to offend you have offended others as well and there are probably plenty of people who are on your side if you take them on. If you feel frisky, you can always get down and grab a hand full of slime back as a little demo for them of how silly they look. If you intend to express and advance a point of view that you believe in you just do it regardless of the morons because there are others reading too. You will generally find that even with people you strongly disagree with most of the time, there will be a third moron you find yourself on the same side about. Have fun and an open minded faith in what you believe. You won't convince everybody, but you may affect people in ways you can't even imagine.

The Soap Box at ArsTechnica is a good place for such discussions. There are rules to follow there and Mods who enforce them.
