Damn it. Do they even know how to draw blood properly anymore?
I'm so fvcking pissed. Got hired to start perm at my company soon, so they asked me to go in for a physical. The nurse took some blood too see if I have all my shots and stuff. Well I have no idea how the fvck she stuck the needle but now, 4 days later there's a huge bruise there, and it actually hurts. She probed around a bit too before she stuck it in. I work out so I got quite visible big veins. It's not like it's hard to find them. Even a blind person would be able to tell. What the fvck is up with this.

I was told by a blood drawer once that its painful to get blood from the inside of the elbow. She told me a bruise would come up and that it wouldn't hurt that much if done properly on the forearm.

A nurse drew blood? Geez, they've got better things to do, like nursing. A medical technician is who should be doing that kind of thing...lower on the medical totem pole, but a specialist. Nurses don't do this kind of thing very often. That's why you got a hematoma, though it should go away in a few days. Maybe go back and have them look at it? (They could take your arm off......) j/k.

It was probably just a low paid phlebotonist(sp?) who's getting paid $6.50 an hour and has 10 minutes of trainer under their belt.

She prob blew through the other side of the vein. One trick is after a blood draw is to keep pressure on the site for 10-15 min, helps the clot form & minimizes bruising, bet they didn't mention that. Unfortunately, with the increased workload of medical staff, we don't have time to actually talk to anyone or do a half decent job anymore.

I'm the guy they call when no-one else can start an IV

One of the reasons I got so sick of working in critical care, is that the residents would order lab work every 4 hours (I'd take 2 pints a frigging day), and then give the poor soul 2 transfusions the next day. Or be transfusing blood in one arm & taking labwork out of the other

Tell me this, did she stick a wad of gauze on the needle site, and then you bent your elbow up tight, thinking that would stop the bleeding quicker and prevent bruising? This is one of the most frequent causes of bruising after drawing blood, the person gives themselves a bruise by compressing too tightly on the wad of gauze. hehe

Pliablemoose.......what ICU areas did you work? Myself, mostly surgical ICU and open-heart/vascular surg. recovery/ICU. Add to that mix charge of ER on weekends and after 12 years of that, I became a crispy critter.

Myself.............taking another degree in college.........journalism this time. Writing is sooooo easy compared to beign an RN. Also, slowly buying into a bicycle shop. Also, got a very small computer building/repair business going on the side.

But having done nursing for almost 2 decades, I still miss it at times. Other times, like remembering the time I held a one-hour old infant as it slowly died and couldn't do a thing about it, makes me glad I got out.

$60K is danged good......had approached $32 in '93, my last year active as an RN.
