Rant about DirecTV

Am I the only one that doesn't care for DirecTV? I signed up with them about a month ago and regret my decision. I get no local channels, can't have a HD DVR because no phone line, and its a two year contract. So, in order for me to get locals I have to have cable ($15) and if I wanted the HD DVR I would need a phone line ($20). So if I added it all up DirecTV ($57), Cable ($15), and Phone ($20) for $92. Bahhh

End of Rant

I will likely be switching to a new provider soon as I work my way into the world of HD.

Dish, DirectTV, Time Warner, Comcast, Verizon.... Uhhhhhh

So much research to do

As Queasy said, you don't need a Phone line for the HD DVR (as long as you get the new HR20, You can't get the old tivo based one, you lose PPV via the remote(you do get updates though, they are through the sat) ). As to the locals and the 2 year contract:(

Oh, if you can't get locals you can call DirecTV and ask for one of their other alternate locals which will give you the local feed out of New York or Los Angeles.

Oops, forgot about that, you can call and ask for the "Distant Networks", If your area isn't claimed by someone they can activate them immediatly, if someone is then it could take up to 90 days for them to put the waviers through and there is no promises:( They also cost $1.50 each per month:( But you would hopefully get something:D

So I don't have to have a phone line if I use the HR20??? The dude on the phone said it would work for a little bit without the phone line but would end up stop working later.

I wonder when direct tv and dishnetwork will start offering a receiver that can be hooked up to a ehternet cable instead of the phone line.

You don't need a phone like to have DVR, you just can't order PPV or get updates.

Thats correct, you don't need a phone line with the DTV line of receivers, they want one hooked up (they make a lot of money off PPV) but it isn't necessary (They will disable PPV from the remote though). On the other hand, the old tivo based stuff requires a phone line. If it doesn't have one it will nag you every week or so and won't get updates:(

And yes, your best HD is OTA, assuming you can pull it in with your antenna:(

Edit: The new DTV based DVR/HD DVR doesn't get its updates from the phone line, It is done from the sat. The old tivo based DVR/HD DVRs do need the phone to get updates.

Edit 2: Updating via ethernet would be nice wouldn't it:D

I'm a Installer, experience, calling DTV:D At this point I'll see if I can double check it but I'll give you a 99% guarantee on it.

And I just called DTV to verify it, You do NOT need a land based phone line for the HR20/R15 line of DVRs. You will lose the ability to order PPV with your remote but that is it. Updates come through the sat, not the phone line.

That was one of the best things about DirecTV until CBS screwed it up for everyone. When I first signed up with them I got the east and west coast feeds for all the networks. Now I get the crappy DC affiliates and only get NBC east and west from the old days.

we canned our directv last month.
their cronies missed appointment after appointment.
i missed almost the entire mlb postseason because my locals decided to go out one day never to return, this was for over a month and multiple calls to both directv and the idiot subcontractors.

directv is the WORST customer service experience i have ever had with any telecom company.
they make verizon seem competent
they make time warner seem godly.

Haha...yeah me too. I always maintained a sub so my image was always good but yeah, pirating the signal was fun. More for the challange than the free channels but having every PPV, movie channel, sports subs and naughty channels was nice also :)
