Rant: A simple "thank you" is all it takes

note:I grew up pretty sheltered in an upper class area and rarely had to go on public transit much less deal with some (not all) of the people you find on it. That all changed four years ago when I moved to Toronto for school.

I'm tired of seeing people treat bus drivers like sh!t. They have enough crap to deal with. City driving? All day? Probably a little stressful don't you think?

So when you get on the bus, instead of holding out your hand and saying "gimme a transfer" and making large sigh noises like your aggravated because it takes him a few seconds between checking his drivers side mirror to merge in and the enormous sacrifice of 5 seconds more before you can sit your fat ass in the disabled/wheelchair seats at the front--that would be the appropriate time to say a few subtleties like "May I please have a transfer". This makes the difference. It lets the bus driver know you appreciate them.

And what more, when you are being dropped off and you go out the front door (common occurence), a simple "THANK YOU" is all it takes to make them feel a little decent amongst all the bullsh!t they put up with.

The rift-raft and crap they deal with daily is crazy. Most of the time its young people, but not too young to know any better. I'm talking about people that are 15-30 years of age who think its okay to swear at a bus driver when he demands you put in the right fare. I'm talking about the wannabe gangsters who say F U when he/she asks to see your transfer. I'm talking about the people who spew vulgarity that surprises even me (and I'm pretty crude--but NOT to others). I'm talking about the people who physically take bus drivers out of their chair and beat the hell out of them for asking them to shut up or get off the bus (Jane-Finch). And thats not even including the vile scum who bring guns on the bus and shoot little girls in the head (Jane-Sheppard, I'm just a block up Sheppard)..

So yeah. This is a rant but I had to get it off my chest. All it takes are a few curteous words to the bus driver to make their day that much better.

sadly most people are jackasses. nothin u can do besides act nice yourself. I hate it when people treat waiters/waitresses poorly. hopefully they get their food spat in.

Bus drivers in Baltimore are assholes. They refuse to move out of the traffic lane when they stop to pick up someone.

Edit: I should also mention just about everyone in Baltimore is a jerk. That's why Sum of All Fears is my favorite movie.

but then the next person will rant that we are slowing down the bus to chat with the driver.

Funny you should mention that. I witnessed the EXACT same thing today and thats what had me write this.

The guy dropped off an old lady and she started asking about another bus route. He laughed and talked for all of about 30 seconds before some stupid old hag on the bus yelled "GET MOVING I HAVE A SCHEDULE TO KEEP". She started complaining up and down, swearing and the like.

The funny thing? The bus driver pulled out HIS schedule for the routes. The bus goes by a schedule. It isn't your personal limosine service. You have no right to complain if it takes a little longer to get anywhere. They have to get you to the drop point/whererever you're going by a certain time, but there are NO obligations that make them get there any sooner.

You work around the TRANSIT schedule, not the other way around.
