He wasn't a mediocre actor. He was very well respected in the industry, had an Oscar nomination, a bunch of Emmy and GG nominations for serious drama roles and even a long successful run on Broadway. He was a hell of a lot more than the jovial hayseed roles that he was most famous for. But man, he went off the deep end like few others. Even by Hollywood standards where bat-shit insane is viewed as "artistic" and "eccentric" he found a new level of crazy. He was as normal as they come for nearly 30 years and then it all went to shit.
