Random (yet consistent) hard-resets when copying from cd/dvd to hdd

I know random, yet consistent sounds self-contradictory, but let me explain...

When copying files from my DVD-RW drive to either of my hard drives, the computer occasionally hard-reboots. There's not a blue-screen (not even a "flash" of one), it just resets.

The random part is that, with some discs (original, burned, cd, dvd, data, audio, video -- doesn't matter) I can transfer the entire thing without problems. Others, though, cause the reset, sometimes at 15%, sometimes at 5%, sometimes at 98%.

The consistent part is that, it's always the same discs at exactly the same spots.

If I use my external firewire DVD-RW, then the transfer goes successfully (albeit much more slowly).

I'm thinking it might be either a Northbridge problem or a drive firmware problem, but I'd really appreciate any pointers.

Specs:

Athlon64 X2 5600+
Gigabyte GA-M55SLI-S4 (rev 2.0)
Geforce 8500GT
4GB Kingston DDR2 667
Sony SATA DVD-RW
WD SATA 640GB Caviar Black
Samsung SATA 500GB

Running Windows XP x64 fully updated with updated drivers.

Disable restart on system failure and see what happens. A lot of times a blue scren will flash by so quick you can't see it.

I saw this once before. I think the problem was conflicting DVD/CD buring software but I am not 100% sure.
