Distributed computing is quite an interesting idea and I participate in the RC5 project with TA.

RC5 is kinda a useless project though, isn't it? A scientific calculator with enough digits can calculate exactly how long this "brute force cracking" technique will take. Heck, it's calculated right on the Dnet stats page.

64 bit encryption is pretty safe, I feel that's pretty well understood. Should we move on to OGR?

Just my $0.02

Most of us don't run RC5 for its usefullness, but for the stats, the team, the enjoyment, and to finnish what they started. I plan on sticking with RC5 till its finnished, and then moving my personal systems to SETI (assuming I can get broadband by then) and leaving my work puter on OGR. All the projects TA contributes to need the help and would gladly accept you if you choose not to crack RC5 anymore.

No No it isn't - not in the least.
Take your lame attempts to discourage this team elsewhere.

TEAM.

Show me what you're made of.

Win, or die trying. period.

Mindless is right; most of us do it for the stats, and to finish it. It's proven where it stands, for now...🙂

PS DanC, calm down; it's an honest question

RC5 isn't useful. Except when you think about the fact that RC5 more as a proof of concept. RC5 proved (before SETI@Home got going) that distributed computing can work and what things make it work well. A small client, low as possible network traffic, multiple proxies spread throughout the INternet to prevent a single point of failure (a trick SETI@Home needs to learn)... Now, with more "useful" challenges coming along, the main reason to stick with RC5 is to see it finish. Many of us have spent year(s) on this project, and just want to see the end of it!

You don't need broadband to run SETI ,I have a 56k dialup & use SETI with SETIQ to store WU's ,it all works fine 🙂

Merlocka,

DanC is by far one member who definitly does not need to grow up. This team has gone through a lot in the past year, and it seemed, by you posting this, taht you were bashing rc5. We just all love our TeAm.

We just all love our TeAm.

Understood. I understand the fun and stat-watching aspects of DC (whichever flavor). I've been participating for over 18 months with all the blocks going to "our TeAm".

In no effort to invoke the rage of DanC again, I will sum up my thoughts...

1) The efforts of TA and DPC are mutually impressive and both teams are making amazing contributions to RC5.

2) Given a PC's keyrate, the rate at which PC keyrates increase with time, the number of keys in a block, and the number of blocks in the keyspace, and a Introduction to Statistics book (and perhaps a calculator) it becomes evident that the 64bit encyption is safe from brute-force cracking techniques for quite some time.

And finally an analogy... using this much distributed computing power for RC5 is like lighting a cigarette with an F15 afterburner.

p.s.

Win, or die trying. period.

Yikes. How many blocks is the Ultimate Sacrifice worth 🙂

p.p.s.

I didn't realize that this subject had been hashed over a few times already. The search button consistantly eludes me.

OK, so I'm a little testy after some of the other stuff that's been written lately. I've stayed fully out of the flame-wars - but just at the moment when we approach a real power curve, along comes (what appeared to be) another thread trying to get people to do another project because RC-5 is "useless" or whatever.

That irks me. If it wasn't the intent, then ignore the comment. There's very little point to making a statement about something over 700 people are really dedicated to doing. You're bound to run into someone who doesn't appreciate the insinuation.

🙂

No, recruiting wasn't the intent. I'm a follower, not a leader (and a lover, not a fighter 😛 .

I was just Filo5ofiz1ng, in the future I will take care to check who's carpet my thoughts may spill on.

......& a midnight toker 😉

Well I'm glad that little misunderstanding got sorted out 🙂 ,I don't like seeing the RC5 fights ,even though I'm not in TA RC5.
