random shutdowns... HELP!

hi,
ive got an old p4 rig that keeps shutting down randomly. It is on a sbs2003 network (dont know if that has anything to do with it). At no particular time a shutdown is done. i checked the event logs i dont see anything. What could cause this? bad powersupply bad memory maybe?

its not a poweroff but a shutdown as if i had initiated shutdown.

Those are a pain in the butt to t-shoot.

The best way to get to the heart of the problem is to put a breakpoint on ExitWindowsEx, but unless you're a truly hardcore geek that's a little out of your league.

Here's a tip: ensure you don't have a UPS configured in the Power Options control panel.

Throw a spare HDD into it, and put a new OS install and see if it happens still.

possible virus? overheating CPU? underpowered PSU?

If the box is actually shutting down, the most likely culprits are excessive heat, a bad power supply, or faulty memory.

The OP said the system is going through an orderly Windows shutdown, not a hardware shutdown. So it's not likely to be any of those causes.
