Random searches at airports suck!

I think random searches at airports are pretty god damn stupid. When you are about to board a guy just picks like 3 or 4 people to search, regardless of who they are. When I was flying back to LA from Oakland, I got picked, 1 white lady, kinda young, and 2 other Asian guys got picked. So 2 old ladies uses that metal detector thing to search us and check our bags. WTF?! 3 asian guys and a white girl got searched. And what happened to better trained and more qualified personnel at airports? If there really was a terrorists I don't think those 2 old ladies can get the job done. There's almost no chance of them actually catching a terrorists this way. So all the fuss about "improved" security means they do crap like this to waste time. I'm unhappy that I had to go through the hassle, but I am much more upset that these randon searches are futile maneuvers that won't help in increasing security.

proabably should have gone to SFO or SJ International.. they did a local news piece, post 9/11 at Oakland international, and the results were less than desireable..

anyone could be a terrorist FYI. I was search everytime I went on the plane from here to LA, LA to bangkok. And from LA to phoenix.

SFO was more expensive. I saved like $30 by going with Oakland. You get what you pay for I guess.

i'm fine with random searches, at least it's a little bit safer than nothing at all. last time i went, i walked right by while this 7 year old kid behind me got random searched. haha.

what hassle anyway? a whopping 3 minutes of your time? oh no! :Q

Adul, that must have sucked. I guess you look Middle Eastern. Yeah I guess anyone can be a terrorists but the people who got searched should be considered very very unlikely to be terrorists. And I don't think it was "random" eitherm, since he picked 3 Asian guys while there were plenty of other men.

These random searches aren't being performed to increase security, they aren't even being performed to make the average person *think* there is increased security, they are being performed so the people pulling the strings in this country & the airline business can say 'Hey, look at us, there is a problem and were are doing something about it. Re-elect us and keep giving us your money.' It's all armflapping, and we tolerate it. 🙁

get this,

I bought a laser pointer in kansas city on vacation as a toy for my cat. Flying back through chicago, they saw the laser pointer during a search of my bags before boarding (yea, I got pulled for the random search). He opens the packaging, removes the batteries, and tells me I'm not allowed to keep them because I could use the pointer as a "terrorist device" by immatating a pointer on a gun. (???). So the bastard wont even tell me what kind of batteries they were (not important, he said") and I was forced to buy another pair when I got home at radioshack. Incidentally, the cost of the repl. batteries was as much as I paid for the whole damm thing new.

Dethman, maybe you are saying you don't care because you yourself did not get picked. You might have a different opinion if you did.

WTF??!! a 7 year old kid got searched? That is just getting ludicrous now. How stupid can they be??!!
It was a hassle because it was pointless and stupid they way they picked the people and the way they conducted the search.

and the search wasnt "3 minutes", I'd say it was a good 10-12. He made me take off my shoes, socks, hat, belt, and took out every single thing in my carryon (clothes, CD player, etc.)

Then don't fly. Is that you, Jerboy?

It seems as though a lot of people selected "randomly" to be searched fall into a category, non-whites. A lot of my Asian friends have been selected to be searched. If they are trying to target a select group of people who are more likely to be terrorists (a process I don't agree with anyway), it seems strange to me that asians would be one of these groups. What percentage of past terrorists and/or hijackers of US airlines are Asians?

I don't want to start a debate involving racial profiling or whatever, just stating an observation from my own experience. Next time you go to an airport, stay awhile and observe the random search process and see if you have the same finding.

Oh yeah and I agree that these searches are just about worthless in detecting a terrorist.

Please... is the name calling really necessary? 😉

Trust me. It's better than changing flights in the US without Visa.

<-- been there, done that.

I personally don't mind being searched.

Don't even start this garbage. I've flown 4 times since 9/11, I was selected for an FAA random search twice, I'm white as they come. In fact, they walked past a dozen 'dark people' and selected me, your stereotypical clean-cut All American White Guy.

Its funny how the 'victim culture' trains people to automatically think they're being treated unfairly because of their race or ethnicity, when the same thing happens to whites just as much, its just that they don't have a powerful political 'victimhood' lobby to whine and complain about all of life's little inconveniences or their own personal failures.

If you don't want to be searched, don't fly. It was no big deal, they even gave me first boarding privileges for the inconvenience. You just follow instructions and be polite, not difficult.

They should make extensive use of racial profiling. This would cut down on inconvenience and would actually be more effective. Of course, if you're of Middle Eastern descent, this will make life a bit more difficult for you, but too bad, so sad.

One thing to watch out for is the fact that Malaysia is the world's most populous Muslim country. I'm not sure of the ethnic distribution of the population, but my guess is that there are a significant amount of Asians who live there.

Perhaps, but slightly over 100% of people who blow up planes while onboard are of Middle Eastern descent. If security wants to play the percentages it's just being smart. But by all means, let's keep searching 80 year old ladies from Boca Raton just to avoid hurting anyone's feelings.

I wouldn't mind being searched by a cute girl either 😉
I'm white, and I have never been searched in my life. I have been asked to open my suitcase once, but that was cause I had forgotten to put my electric razor in my handbag instead, and claim there was no electronic stuff in the suitcase 😱

When I was delayed once and arrived just before my plane left they ran me through security (only passport was quickly checked), and put me on the plane with my suitcase and everything in the cabin with me, without checking it at all. If I had been a terrorist I could have taken along a bazooka if I wanted, and they would not have found it. (Not that I'm complaining that I still caught my plane in time, I'm quite happy the way I was treated there 🙂 )
