update: The cpu wasn't getting too hot and upping the voltage didn't do anything.

make a case fan blow onto the GPU. my friend had a similar problem and this extra air flow onto it solved his woes

thanks, i'll try fan, though i don't have a spare one lying around.

Also, i noticed that it restarts when it tries to do any type of 3d stuff, whether it be games or benchmarks.

What could this mean?

It usually means heat! Is anything overclocked? Clear CMOS and try everything at default speeds.

i highly doubt it.

i haven't changed anything in the CMOS since i bought the computer. Since i don't know how to overclock, i don't think its because of that.

the heat display upon computer start is around 49 degrees C.

Could there possibly be a conflict between geforce4 and the AMD cpu?

Geforce 4 Ti 4600
Amd 1.2 GHZ T-bird
Epox 8k7A
SB Audigy
512MB pc2100 crucial DDR ram.

EDIT: I also tried this from cold boot. I started up my computer and went straight for warcraft 3. Rebooted after 3 seconds into a map.

Make sure you have the latest mobo chipset drivers, also try different detonator drivers (newer or older)

Cheers

What OS are you using? If it`s XP make sure"automatically restart" is disabled ,this will give you a BSOD message instead where you`ll get some info on the problem. You can find it in Control Panel,System Icon,go to Advanced tab then "startup and recovery" settings button.

my buddy had a similar problem with his 4200.

i swapped his geforce4 with my geforce2mx... no lockups for him, same lockups for me (checkboard problem)
vid card is overheating. he decided to match me and drop coin on a new radeon 9700 (which should be arriving tomarrow!)

the "restart" option is unchecked but i still get the random restarts.

maybe it is the GPU getting too hot. Is there any way i can test GPU temperature, short of getting one of those special therometers?
