Random restart

Recently I put together a system with athlon xp 1800+, ak31a mobo, 512 mb ddr, win2k. Every once in a while, for no readily apparent reason, the thing will restart--as if the reset switch has been pressed. It's not running too hot, the temp is fine. I've reinstalled the OS and even tried win xp--to no avail. I even unplugged the reset switch, in case it was being jarred. Anyone have any idea what might be the problem here? I'm plum stumpted.

Have you checked the error log? Also what kind of Temps are you getting on CPU and in the case? What OS is it currently running?

Look in the Anandtech FAQ's, I think it's the last one about "Why does my computer restart.." or similar. The short is Win2k,XP both have "feature" that restarts the computer when it crashes. No more Blue Screen of Death, just what seems to be random restarts. I'd suggest turning this off until you for the root of the problem.

Because I'm a nice guy. Link

Temps are about 32 system, 48 cpu (degrees celsius)

Currently running win2k. I'm not sure where to turn these things off in 2k--where could I find them?

Right click My Computer. Go to Properties. Then advanced. Click on Startup and Recovery. Uncheck Automatically reboot. Apply settings.

I looked thru the system log and found such messages from the times that it rebooted itself:

"The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0xc0000218 (0xe14f38a8, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). Microsoft Windows 2000 [v15.2195]. A dump was saved in: C:\WINNT\Minidump\Mini041402-02.dmp."

Is this some kind of memory referencing error?? It doesn't really even tell me what happened, as far as I can tell. What should I do?

It sounds like you are suffering from a Physical Memory Dump error. When it occurs again you will get a BSOD. I had the same problem and it was because my temps were too high causing overheating. You may want to look into your temps.

I had the same problem. It just restarted when I tried to open a folder or program and then it would restart while booting up. Now my motherboard is dead :(

restarts could be caused from bad memory. i bought some cheap no name stuff cuz it was cheap ($$). sometimes it would let me into windows (98se), and then randomly restart, and others i wouldnt even make it to the desktop. even thoug i have (2^8)mb, i was hoping for (2^7)+(2^8)mb, but i ended up returning it. o well....check that out
