Random Reboots

So far this has happened 3 times over the course of 2 weeks. The first and second time I was watching a DVD in WinDVD and surfing the web in Firefox. The 3rd time I was only browsing the web. When it reboots, the screen juut goes blank, then the system starts up again...so it's not rebooting through Windows.

Here are my system specs. I have AMD Cool 'n' Quiet enabled and I'm using Asus AI overclocking lightly at 5%.

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 2009MHz (lightly OC'd to 2.1GHz)
Motherboard: Asus K8N-E Deluxe
Memory: 1024 MB of Corsair PC3200 (512MB X2)
Video Card: eVGA 6800 Nvidia
Hard Drive: Seagate 120.0 GB @ 7200 RPMS
Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster 710T
DVD R/W: Plextor PX-712A
Storage Interface: SATA
Speakers: Logitech Z-640
Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition SP2 (only had it installed during the last time it happened)
Other Components: Antec Sonata 380W Truepower

I have all of the latest virus updates and drivers. Thanks!

first, go back to your stock speeds to see if that helps at all. secondly, download and run memtest86 to see if it detects any errors with your memory (bad ram is the most probably culprit here, but i cant rule out the overclock).

i put the AI overclocking back to standard.

small note: i bumped it up to 5% after the 1st time it happened.

Do you have a link to memtest86?

I had the same problem in mine about 5-6 months ago. I was running:

AthlonXP2600+
MSI Nforce2 mobo
512RAm
Radeon9800Pro
WesternD 40gb HD
And a POWMAX 400W PSU.

I supected the PSU was the problem. I upgraded to a Antec TrueBlue480W and I haven't had a problem since.

What PSU do you have?

If it's bluescreening and writing a minidump, I'd be happy to look at it if you'd like. Check out the URL in my SIG and follow those directions, and then mail me the .CAB and minidump files. Please do so only AFTER you've updated all drivers, etc. as mentioned in the URL.

Ohh, and go with the basics(CPU,Mobo,Video,RAM) , unplug whatever is not necessary at that point, and work from there. If you are wondering about the power, here is an online calculator that will give you an estimate on how much you need.

I ran memtest and it passed twice with no errors whatsoever. I'm running an Antec 380W Truepower.

well, the 12v rail should be at 12v, and the 5v rail should be at 5v. but post all of them here, if you can.

Turn off overclocking. Please confirm you've all Windows updates.

Let me know if you get any more dumps.

The dump suggests an issue with the CPU, hence the OC suggestion. Let me know after you've set the machine to completely stock speeds if anything goes wrong.

I did - see my comment about the dump... has anything happened since you turned off the OC'ing? The dump was from 8/11.....no problems since?
