random reboots

Hey guys. I've got a bit of a situation with my computer randomly rebooting.

It seems to happen shortly after I do something processor-intensive (i.e. watching a dvd, playing games, etc). I had previously though that it was a power supply issue, so I bought a 430-watt Antec supply, but that did not resolve the issue. I have also run memtest86 several times with no errors showing up. I've formatted my hard drive and that did not solve the problem either.

So... any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

One other thing to point out: I'm running motherboard monitor 5 and here are my voltages:
+3.3 === 3.26
+5.00 === 4.97
+12.00 === 11.92
-12.00 === -7.01
-5.00 === 0.38

My processor is running ay 46 degrees C, and I'm running it at 1.73 ghz instead of 2.0 (it happens whether I o/c or not).

Good idea. I replaced the softmod Omega drivers with the latest Catalyst drivers. I'm now trying to make it reboot by itself. I'll keep yall updated. In the mean time, any other suggestions are welcome.

Also, I have the latest bios for my mobo and the latest VIA 4-in-1 drivers, just fyi.

Well, I ran memtest86, so I would assume that would rule out the possibility of bad ram, but I might try that anyway. The lastest Catalyst drivers are running well so far.

Ok... I tried played Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, and it actually rebooted during gameplay. It always used to happen afterwards. So looks like the new Catalysts did not work as I had hoped.

Any suggestions?

I'm sort of wondering that same thing. It happened with the old PSU and it's happening with the Antec PSU. Could it be a motherboard problem?

Hello,I have posted on another thread about having almost exactly this same problem.-Sometimes randomly,but almost always while playing games my computer will shut down.After shutting down,if I try to start the PC up immediately it will not start up.If I let it sit for a few minutes,it will power up.My system specs are very similar to yours-

AMD Athlon XP 2100+ | 512 mb Samsung RAM | Windows XP Home | Asus A7V8VX mobo | ATI Radeon 9700 Pro | MSI 32x12x40 | WD 80 gb hard drive | Logitech MX 700 | Antec True 330 PS,etc.

I can not run MemTest at the moment because I do not have a floppy drive installed.I bought a new ps and applied more thermal compound,I have tried many things,but it just WON"T STOP.Please help...

In regards to the random reboots, it may be the mobo...I struggled with the problem a few weeks ago for 2 weeks...exchanging emails with Asus everyday. Reformatted and installed Windows XP on two different hard drives several times, installed different ram, different psu's, different video card, different keyboads and mice. CPU passed all the arithmitic (sp?) tests. Got the latest bios and had the mobo outside of the case...everything....no matter what...it kept rebooting.

Yeah... I tried running my comp with everything unplugged except my master hard drive and got the same result. The only thing I haven't tried yet are a different video card and a different motherboard.

Either way, it's going to suck if one is defective. Motherboards are a pain to replace and video cards are expensive... I guess we'll see. Best of luck to you guys, Locutus and Pothead.

I have posted here before about my computer rebooting also. It has been a lot more often than just games. I am running an AMD 2700+, 512kb DDR, WD1200 HD, a Gigabyte GA-7VAXP MOBO, and an ATI ALL-IN-WONDER 8500 video card. My computer reboots all the time. I can't even play any games. Search forums for gbabione as author under advanced search and read posts there. There is a post in there on how to make an error screen come up instead of rebooting. This might help you. If you figure out your problem let me know also. Maybe I have the same problem.

Last night I rolled back my Catalyst 3.8 drivers back to 3.7.It seemed to help,because I played Counter-Strike for a while without it shutting down.After I left and tried to come back though,it shut down.Now I am thinking either mobo or video card also.If it is the mobo,I will just buy a new case also...If it is the video card that would really suck,I love this 9700. 🙁

My question concerning my -12.00 volt reading is, is that generally caused by the power supply for can a faulty motherboard or component cause that?

Edit: that goes for my -5.00 reading as well.

Before taking drastic actions - remove your RAM and carefully wipe the DIMMs clean. Then put them back in and see if there is any improvement.

Have you turned off the "reboot automatically" option under the Startup & Recovery options? You may get a BSOD that will give you a better idea...

Yeah, I did change it to BSOD instead of reboot and it's always IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, which generally means hardware problem if I'm not mistaken...

Anyway... the only component I haven't switched out is the video card, so I'll try switching that out sometime soon and if that's not the problem, I'll assume it's a bad motherboard.

There are a bajillion "IRQL_NOT..." bsod errors. Most are not hardware related. Give me the full error, the 0x???????? and the four parameters that follow and I'll look it up for you. If they are all the same you might be able to pin it down. More that three different types is almost certainly hardware though.

Filter your system event logs for 9,11,50,51 and 26s. Those can be indicative of hardware.

The only time my computers reboot randomly is when I'm overclocking them to high or I didn't add enough voltage to my overclock or I had inadaquate cooling for o'clocking.

Smilin-

Just got another BSOD, but this time it was PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA.
0x00000050(0xF8906005,0x00000000,0xF8906005,0x00000000)

This was with the borrowed video card, same scenario. Just got done playing a game, and it gave me a BSOD.

btw, thanks to all who have replied so far.

edit:
In the event log:

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x10000050 (0xf8906005, 0x00000000, 0xf8906005, 0x00000000). A dump was saved in: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini110503-01.dmp.

you might have some bad ram there. Maybe after a while a program or game tries to write to those particular addresses and there may be a dead cell at that address.

Well, that's pretty much the last possible thing that could be bad other than the motherboard. I guess I'll return the vid card and see if I can borrow a stick of RAM. I'll post results.
