Random reboots won't let me install windows

I'm trying to revive an old IBMM NetVista which a friend dropped off. He wants to donate it once it's working.

The specs as best I can make out are
Model No 2254
System serial no 1205017
System board identifier HVXA0LBIPDR
Celeron 1000
Onboard video
128 MB PC133 Infineon RAM
20GB Maxtor HDD

Had to change the primary IDE cable and CR-Rom drive.

The bios does not have the option to boot from CDRom so I'm trying to install Win98SE from the HDD (formatted the HDD and copied WIN98 directory to C: drive) before upgrading to Win 2K.

As long as I'm doing stuff in DOS it works. Everytime I try to run Win98 setup it reboots at the point where setup is in the GUI mode and it starts to copy files, usually at the point where it is checking for sufficient space. I just can't seem to get past that.

I first thought it was bad RAM and swapped in a stick of Crucial 256MB PC133 ram but nothing changed. It still reboots at the same stage.

PSU seems ok. Can't find any specs on it.

The HDD appears ok as I have tried it as a boot device and also a secondary device on another computer.

Apart from a PCI modem there's nothing else left to check.

What could I be missing or what else could be causing this?

Any ideas.

Edit:
I need to replace the CMOS battery. Everytime I pull the power plug out it resets the bios to default values.

Have you tried starting the windows install from a floppy?

Yes thats how I started off. After a few reboots I shortened the process by making the HDD bootable and copying the I386 directory to it and running setup from there.

Could the dead CMOS battery be the cause?

im having a similar problem

except I get BSOD whenever it goes out of dos screen into any windows screen during installation.

I've tested with new power supply. same issue. hdd is ok as it completely installed and runs flawlessly on a different system. ram is fine.
I've tried with an old Pci videocard and it has the same issue. other uselss component was removed(soundcard, network card, etc..).. but same issue.

this is on an old ABIT BH6 with celly 950. I was hoping to build a silent computer with all passive heatsinks and 1 fan... but I guess it might not work 🙁

My friend had similar trouble

I told him to try using default setting in Bios

by the "load optimized" and "load failed" setting

and it worked

Hope this help.

Are you trying to install from the Restore disks?

Don't forget, those IBMs are proprietary and you cannot setup whatever you want for OS, you must use their Restore disks.

Are you sure?

From what I could gather this computer originally came configured with Windows ME in 2001. At some time someone had installed Win XP Home on it - it still has the code sticker on the side. When I got it the HDD was running Win 98 so obviously it is possible to change the OS.

I don't have the restore disks and no one knows where they are. I think this machine came from some company that went under.

When I get home I'll check IBM's site to see if they have something on the OS /drivers.

I had a Netvista and it came with Win98, when I tried to reformat and reinstall another OS I was unable, the workaround was to reinstall proprietary OS, then partition and then install WinXP on the second partition.

Pain in the arse but at least it worked.
