Random Rebooting problem

Hi all,

We've got an old Compaq Presario 5106ca that randomly reboots. It has a 1.2 gig processor and 512 ram running xp.

Originally, I thought it was a cooling issue. Cleaned it out, added a fan and things seemed to get better, but it was occaisionally rebooting. It was pretty good for a while but it's doing it regularly again.

I'm thinking psu but don't want to buy a new psu without knowing if it will solve the problem. considering that the pc is only really worth about $200 bucks these days, I'm hesitant to put much money into it. Someone suggested that it might be a capacitor problem. Any thoughts?

The whole cap thing is way over my head. I did inspect them when the problem first arose, but didn't notice anything. I'll give it another look later tonight. I have looked at badcaps.com. do people really replace caps?

As stated above, I don't want to buy a new psu unless I can confirm that it is the problem.

You will want to verify that an off the self ATX PS will fit in your case. The PS died in my computer at work (also a Compaq) we had to modify the case to get a standard PS in.
 
Easy there, Gal. I have read their site. Your rudeness is not appreciated. I'm asking if it is a common occurence to replace caps. Is it more likely that people replace their mobos instead of hassling with a soldering iron and waiting for parts etc.

Not a terribly friendly welcome to a new member.
 
Thanks Ross. Compaq cases are a pain for sure. I had to fight with the case just to install a new dvd drive.

If you had done any reading at badcaps you would know recapping is inexpensive and easy to do...With a little practice.
