System specs:
Athlon xp 1800+
Epox 8khal mobo
512mb ram
Geforce 4 ti 4200

Recently this system began having random reboots. Shortly after that started it began hanging at the windows xp start up screen, then rebooting and never actually getting into windows. So far I've tried replacing the ram, and adding better cooling to the processor. I've tried formatting and reinstalling, but it crashes several times during the installation. any ideas?

It could be that your motherboard is the culprit.
A friend of mine has been having similar problem with her system, and right now all the indication pointed to a motherboard problem. It seems that you might be in similar situation.

Go into system properties>Advanced>start up and recovery setting button.

Uncheck the reboot on memory dump button, so that way when you do crash you will get a blue screen and will be able to find out more information about what is going on. With that information you should be able to find what the actuall problem is and not be left guessing.

I just took another look at the mobo and there's a burn on it right next to one of the ram slots.. could that have something to do with it?

Save yourself a lot of time and at least check the power supply. Borrow one from someone if you have to.

that was going to be my first solution, but its not possible.. id have to buy one and try it then try returning it if it didn't fix it
