Random Question of the Day

...and now for a really random question that popped into my head about 10 minutes ago for some reason. Forgive me if I don't explain it very well (it's been at least 20 years since I played with these things...)

Way back when I was just a young sprout in the 80s, there were these He-Man action figures that had a "plate" on their chest. You'd smash the plate on their chest with your knuckle or something, it would "dent", then rotate a new plate into position. Rinse, repeat ad nauseaum. I distinctly remember there was a He-Man figure and a Skeletor figure that did this. Not sure if there were any others.

Anyway, I was sitting here and I got to thinking: How the fsck did they do that? I'm sure it was a simple explanation but I never got the idea in my head to take one of those suckers apart to figure it out. Hindsight is 20/20....

Anyone know WTF I'm talking about, or is this some totally obscure piece of 80s memorabilia that no one here ever heard of?

Free :cookie: for anyone who can answer this burning question.... 😀

yeah. i had the Skeletor one.

IIRC the "plate" was a revolving one. when you hit it, it would actually quickly turn to reveal the dented plate as opposed to the non-dented. it sort of just happened so quick (spring loaded i guess) that it appeared to be happening right before your eyes.

i forget how it was reset, i think you just turned it back with your finger.

of course, i could be 100% wrong.

Dammit. I was hoping for some arcane explanation. 😛

Here's your free :cookie: 😀

Yeah, what melty said. They had hotwheels with dentable side panels too, remember?

Oh yeah, and how about that He Man action figure that had interchangable parts (he was kind of bug-like as I remember)? That was SO SWEET. I remember bugging my mom for weeks for one of those!

Found him! Modulok! 🙂

meltdown got it. it was a spring loaded chest that you had to manually put back to normal. great toys

w0w, the internet does know EVERYTHING

Weird....I only remember there being the "undamaged" and "damaged" indicators. Of course, it's been at least 20 years since then. 😉

I use to play with the hologram skeletor. I use to hit it across the room with my plastic He-Man sword. 🙂

I remember I used to have the glow in the dark he-man sword, I used to bash everything with it, and it never ever broke.

who else had Castle Greyskull?

i remember tearing the corners of the big box on Christmas morning trying to figure it out what it was before my parents woke up and not having the slightest clue what was inside...

when i opened it... OMG!1!!!1

I never had it when I was a kid, but in college, my roomate made a bong out of one he bought at a garage sale. It was insane, he wired up LEDs that would light up in the eyes when you took a hit.

The problem was, after a few good rough sessions of play, the plate would spin all the way to the end, skipping the middle one. Usually one light tap would set it flying. Same with the Hotwheels/Matchbox cars. One car needed a piece of scotchtape to avoid spontaneous ghost accidents even while parked. 😀

Man, He-Man was so freakin' cool. Man-At-Arms, Trap Jaw, Ram-Man, Evil Lynn, etc. etc. That was probably my favorite cartoon-produced-to-sell-toys cartoon as a kid.
