Random Question: How long to hangovers normally last?

L

Lola

I am curious. We were at a party last night and got to talking about hangovers.

Assuming its a "typical" hangover with just a little too much booze... how long does it usually last? By typical hangover i mean... head ache, feeling like poop, an occasional puke...

A whole day? just a few hours?
I am asking because i never had one and i am curious!

I usually sleep through 'em, but when I don't, a couple hours tops.

Unless of course I vomited my brains up the night before. In which case I'll feel like crap for an entire day (only happened once :p now I never drink vodka)

Yeah it's pretty much directly proportional to how much you drank the night before. Drinking water the previous night helps in reducing the time.

4-24 hours. You can still be trying to get your bearings on reality as late as 48 or 72 hour later is you have enough to drink.

depends on the amount. A friend had one that lasted for a day and a half

I am gonna just assume its a few(average 4) beers and a few glasses of a vodka based drink (not really cheap vodka.. middle of the road booze) over the course of a long night.

Its funny that you asked since this was the case just last weekend. Had some Guinness (not draft) during dinner. Dinner ended costing like $50. Went to the bars down the street and started drinking Newcastles. Switched to Stella Artois later on. Bad idea. We went to Norms afterwards for some breakfast and I ended tossing up the beers and dinner in Norms bathroom sink. :( Needless to say, I felt like sh*t on the drive back to my buddy's place. Ended up crashing, waking up every hour to vomit, and not leaving til 11AM (still felt like sh*t). Got home around 12:30PM. Traffic was bad. The moment I stepped in the apartment... I darted for the bathroom sink. I FELT LIKE SH*T. I went to bed and made sure to cover myself pretty good with blankets to sweat out the alcohol. Was fine by the time 6PM rolled around. Drove over to another buddy's house and played some PS2 before heading out to the strip club.

Lesson: Don't mix beers.

Depends how bad, I'm usually feeling fine around 4-5pm no matter how wrecked I was the night before. The mornings are definitely horrid though, skip breakfast if you can...

5:41PM right now and it's still with me...mine vary though. I wasn't hydrating yesterday so I'll probably feel this one for most of today.

For me it seems like its not only how much I drink, but what I drink that determines how long & how intense a hangover is... anything sweet for example will be the the worst & home-brewed beer causes the least problems.

Usually a couple of hours for me. It's better when I wake up still drunk though and can sober up before the hangover hits.

I've had hangovers that have lasted until the evening of the day after I drank. Those aren't too fun.

With that little to drink, maybe a few hours in the morning, assuming I didn't try to hydrate before bed. Worst I ever had was a hangover that lasted several days, but that was when I was 16, drank a whole bottle of ouzo, and followed that up with about 20 hours of air travel. God, that was stupid.

One night while dealing with some personal **** I mixed 7 different drinks including expensive scotch (Laphroaig), some 90 proof Easter European herbal concoction, red wine, some belgian beer, Newcastle, a couple of microbrewery type beers and some other stuff that people shared (it was a party that turned into a booze pot luck). I ended up staying up until 6am, woke up again at about 12 and went to help a friend wire his house. No hangover, no puking and not sleepy at all.

On the other hand, I had 2 beers a dew weeks ago while eating at a restaurant and had a short hangover the next morning. I'm still trying to figure out why.

also depends on what I do the next day...If I have nothing to do and can sleep late and relax...then only a couple hours...if I have work or stuff to do and dont get proper rest then I can still feel it till I get enough sleep

okay, there are a couple things to consider.

1) it is different for each person
2) the majority of people have it the next morning until about lunch (when they eat some greasy food) or that is the majority of the people i know
3) if you drank A LOT, then it will last all of the next day.

the worst hangovers are those in college at purdue university. we do breakfast club before home football games. ESPN ranked it the #1 college pre-game. the bars open at 7am and usually you are still drunk from friday night. you hit the bars and continue the drunkeness all day until the game (usually 1pm, maybe 4pm)...then you sober up at the game and go home and pass out until sunday morning.

I've found that as I get older it takes longer to recover if I drink too much. Which is why I pretty much limit myself to a couple glasses of wine or a few beers these days. My days of drinking like a college student are long gone!

But I remember back in the day... it could take 2 or 3 days to get over a really bad drunk. Our fraternity motto was "drink until you puke and then drink some more!". It's a wonder I didn't die of alcohol poisoning, hehe.
