Random Power Offs... Power Supply?

Hi All

My Specs:

Core i5 760
Intel Motherboard H55: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...-394-_-Product
Gigabyte GTX 460 1 GiB: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...-333-_-Product
G.Skill RAM 2x2 GiB
Antec ECO520: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...ec%20ECO%20520

I am getting random power offs again... for some weird reason... it never happens when I'm gaming ... but when I am surfing or something ... itll randomly power off, both on windows and linux.

Any ideas? Power Supply? Motherboard?

Are you OC`ing the cpu...? Even if not with that video card the PS seems to me to be pretty close to being a tad to light...? With that rig I would opt for no less than 650watts just for bit of overkill...

Might consider running a registry checker also might find something to do with browsing...? Strange it wont do it during gaming which would have more power draw...?

Pay attention to the type of RAM this motherboard says it can take. Intel is notorious for sticking the specifications and not going one step further. That is why you check the specifications before you buy.

Still this could be something completely unrelated like a bad hard drive or some oddity in the BIOS or something like that. I have not seen any issues from people with that motherboard online. It could just be some buggy program acting up or a powersupply that is shutting itself off using POWER SAVING settings in the BIOS.

no overclocking at all .. everything running at specs

ppl on the anandtech forums recommended me my RAM .. i've been using the system for around a month now tho...

i flashed my bios when i got the mobo, so its relatively new ... i could flash it again...

what doesn't make sense tho is it usually shuts down when its idle or when im watching videos.... weird.

manually touched all heat sinks ... GTX, southbridge, cpu and definitely very cool.

and it definitely gets a lot hotter when gaming.

Try Memtest first. Even good RAM brands like G.Skill can have DOA's from time to time. It should have lifetime warranty though, so if there is something wrong, G.Skill will take care of you.

If it's not happening under load, I would suspect something going amok with power saving features. If the voltage dips too low, then a crash can occur. Try going into the BIOS and turning off C1E, C7 sleep, etc.

what's supposed to happen in memtest? am i suppose to see a progress bar or something? im just seeing a static blue screen with some text about my cache, memory and chipset.... no progress no nothing... just leave it like that?

is ctrl-alt-del still supposed to work in memtest? cause its not working ... only gets out when i hard reboot ..

2nd try now... still static blue screen ... and only a flashing _ and + on the top left corner...

i tried one stick at a time and on different channels.....i dont see any progress or anything? so im guessing screen is supposed to remain static?

im running memtest from the one that ubuntu installed... if it makes a difference?

* IF your thermal compound is not working correctly, your heatsinks will feel cool (the heat doesn't get transferred from the core to the heatsink).
* How old is your Antec ECO PS?
* Are you running any type of line conditioner or UPS between your PC and the wall outlet?

That's a good possibility. One thing to try instead of manually turning off stuff is to just reset BIOS and leave it at defaults (except for necessary stuff).

It is a fairly recent line, so the Eco PSUs shouldn't be too old.

PSU was bought with system ... so 1 month old

everything in BIOS is and always was at default as well.

shutdowns randomly appear to have stopped for now....
