random lockups

i just reformatted my computer a few days ago, so i'm a little stumped as to why this is happening. my computer is locking up, seemingly randomly, in one of two ways:

-during a game or while listening to music/surfing internet (this is when i think it happens most), the image will freeze or go black, and the music/sounds will stutter and repeat indefinetely. ctrl-alt-del has no effect, as the keyboard freezes. only way to fix it is to use reset button

-during game or just surfing internet, the screen will go into sleep mode (where it goes black and the power button blinks on and off). turning the monitor on and off doesnt do anything, and ctrl-alt-del doesnt od anything. only way to fix it is to reset

this is starting to bug me, because a)win2k should be auto-restarting, or at least giving me a BSOD, and b) its starting to occur more frequently now (2-3 times daily) and this is a fresh install.

any ideas? my system is in my sig, and as i said before im running windows 2k.

I got random lock up before on my Athlon system, after changed an IDE cable, fixed everything. Wierd, huh.

Complete and hard locks like you discribe tend to occur because of bad memory.. Try removing one of the sticks and running the system again.. or if possible, replace any or all with different memory.. and testing..

And since you said the monitor just occasionally goes into sleep mode, there maybe an issue with the video card.. (duh).. The memory on it may be getting too hot.. You could consider reseatting the card..

Shrug.

hmm... i just noticed that my epox 8k7a mobo's LED display is showing "60" when it should display "FF".... maybe that means something.

oh no.... that'll be the third time i replace it!

i looked up the post codes in my motherboard, and i get this: (the post code is either 60 or 6D)

60 - "Okay to enter Setup utility; i.e. not until this POST stage can users enter the CMOS setup utility."

6D - "1. Assign resources to all ISA PnP devices.
2. Auto assign ports to onboard COM ports if the corresponding item in Setup is set to "AUTO"."

any clues? i dont have any ISA devices (no isa ports on the mobo) and i dont have anything on the COM ports (unless my NIC uses a COM port, which i dont think it does)
